Mechanical failure has not been ruled out as a contributing factor in the horrific accident that claimed three lives in Unanderra on Friday night.
A police forensic team from Sydney yesterday arrived at the Albion Park holding yard to inspect the green Holden Commodore which belonged to Oak Flats resident Adam Nall.
Southern Crash Investigation Unit's Senior Constable Chris Warren said the investigation into the cause of the accident was still in its early stages.
"The forensic examiners are here today looking at the car and looking at the mechanics," Snr Const Warren said.
"They will go right through the car and see if the brakes are working, everything," he added.
Witnesses said they saw the car travelling at speeds of more than 100km/h in the 70km/h zone on the Princes Hwy before the accident.
Police confirmed on Saturday that speed was a contributing factor in the accident.
They would not say what speed the car had reached before it crashed.
Snr Const Warren said the forensic examiners had a big task ahead of them as they studied what was left of the vehicle yesterday.
"It is extremely difficult, given the state of the car," the officer admitted.
"It is also time-consuming and dirty."
