Forget Sydney, Illawarra is the new tourism hub

04 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
Illawarra could soon become the destination and Sydney the day trip after a report revealed there is little to keep visitors interested in Sydney.

A Committee For Sydney Report yesterday showed visitors to the state capital found themselves at a loose end after they had climbed the Harbour Bridge and visited the Opera House.

The comments could not have been better timed for four Illawarra and South Coast tourist operators who have just launched a promotional campaign aimed at showing how much there is for tourists to do so close to Sydney.

Dolphin Watch Cruises, Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, SkyDive the Beach and Jamberoo Action Park have set up a joint initiative at www.southcoastrealadventure.com to offer incentives and target the Sydney tourist market.

Yesterday's report recommended the establishment of a single authority to co-ordinate planning and infrastructure needs in Sydney.

Last week the Shoalhaven became the most successful local government area at the Australian Tourism Awards, an achievement tourism manager Tom Phillips puts down to the co-operation and partnerships between private operators and the council in promoting tourism.

Jamberoo Action Park general manager Dax Eddy said this week's report provided the Illawarra with a great opportunity and South Coast Real Adventures would capitalise on that.

"The mix of attractions in South Coast Real Adventures provides a range of different experiences. People want quality, variety and value," he said.

Illawarra Fly general manager Sean Haylan said operators involved in the South Coast Real Adventures initiative were keen to tell the world about all the new tourism investments within a couple of hours' drive of Sydney.

Hotel Ibis Wollongong's new general manager Klaus Kinateder said when he first discovered the range of attractions on offer he immediately saw Wollongong as the destination and Sydney as the day trip.

I think we are getting a bit too excited and ahead of ourselves. When I go into city mall on a Sunday- QUIET, Yes I agree we have Sydney siders and day trippers coming to the Gong, but to call it a Tourism Hub- please. When the business chamber gets off their butts and has a GOOD LOOK at the potential of this place then a tourist hub will exist- at the moment too many incomplete developments with an economy that still floats as one of the porerst in Australia.

"at a loose end after they had climbed the Harbour Bridge and visited the Opera House"....??? What a load of garbage. Although spectacular attractions Sydney has so much more to offer than the bridge and the opera house. I love Wollongong, and I don't deny that the above mentioned are great attractions but there is a long, long way to go to "become the destination" leaving Sydney behind as "the day trip".

If these boffins were serious they would replace the dilapidated, light effected Welcome to Wollongong sign at Waterfall. It's a joke, it's so faded you can barely read it. So will it be another picture of Sea Cliff Bridge, or the God awful photo they have of the White Elephant at Bulli Tops which shows nothing of the view at all. This place is suppose to get 7,000 people a week but as a person who goes into Sydney quite often to the Rocks, Walsh Bay, Quay, Opera House area a lot, I am quite surprised, that after the holiday period, you can fire a cannon in those areas and hit barely anyone during the week. Somehow I don't think a water slide or viewing platform is going to entice people. Maybe the Illawarra Escarpment and beaches will, but then they are not privately owned to make money.
