28 Dec, 2009 05:17 PM
Up to four people are feared dead after a collision between a fuel tanker and three cars on the South Coast today.

The tanker exploded and two of the cars caught fire about 4.50pm at East Lynne, about 20km north of Batemans Bay.

''There is speculation as to the number of fatalities but we will not speculate at this stage,'' a police spokeswoman said.

''There's talk of two (deaths), there's talk of four but we do not have any information on the fatalities at this stage.''

The Princes Hwy has been closed in both directions.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
