Four ideas for crumbling Wentworth St

Four ideas for crumbling Wentworth St

20 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
Four options for the future of Port Kembla's dilapidated main street have been unveiled by the Port Kembla Chamber of Commerce ahead of a workshop to debate the precinct's future.

The chamber will host a business workshop on Tuesday at Port Kembla Leagues Club from 4.30pm to debate the redevelopment of the Wentworth St area, being dubbed the "Port Kembla Quarter".

The area extends from Church St to the south, Military Rd to the north, and the lane between Wentworth and Kembla streets to the north.

The workshop coincides with Wollongong City Council's decision last month to resume the Port Kembla Main Street Study, which was indefinitely deferred in 2008 despite being 90 per cent complete.

Scenarios being put forward by chamber member Sandy Halley range from seven-storey development throughout the town to transforming Port Kembla into a trendy Newtown-style town characterised by art galleries, cafes and a vibrant nightlife.

Doing nothing would "sentence the businesses, residents and property owners to a future of further dilapidation," he said.

But the preferred option is to implement the draft strategy prepared by consultants GHD during initial work on the revitalisation strategy.

Chamber president Phil Bowden said the Port Kembla Quarter could be a hub for specialist businesses.

"Doubling building density in Port Kembla's main street is the spark we have been waiting for to ignite investment in the business precinct," he said.

"We want more Tonitto's - specialist providores making or selling pasta, coffee, chocolate, cheese, sausages, ethnic specialties - and more Fellini's and Romeo's restaurants.

"We want more artists, artisans and other creative industries living, making and selling in the Quarter," Mr Bowden said.

The report recommends higher density development behind existing shop fronts and heritage facades.

Four-storey height limits would be implemented along Wentworth St, except for gateway sites at each end of Wentworth St where up to seven storeys could be permitted.

A rezoning proposal for the Wentworth Lodge backpackers' hostel site has already been sent to the Department of Planning for endorsement.

The proposed business park zone would allow a building up to 20m high, or six storeys.

Good money after bad? After the $'s already spent on Wentworth St. will this new idea achieve anything? Did WCC send someone to Maleny in Queensland? Maleny was a town of boarded up shops in the 1980's when some of the 'alternative lifestyle' people started to move in because of the cheap rents. Like language, places evolve, depending on whats to live or do usiness there. Incidentally it was at Maleny that the idea of LETS [local entrprise trading system] came to Australia.

About bloody time something was done with the hole! I lived there when i was a teenager and have vowed to never return. Should this plan go ahead would it mean that someone will be doing something with the "nightlife" that already exists there, that we all know, hate. I cant afford rent at my house anymore and have looked everywhere in the illawarra. The only affordable accommodation is in Port which i have avoided like the plague! if this plan were to go ahead I would love to live there again.

Nice drawing of the Newtown-style streetscape, sounds like a great idea BUT outdoor dining?? The air quality is really poor around Port Kembla, not sure we're going to see hordes of people wanting to move in or hang around the streets. There's no getting away from the fact that its a heavy industry area. The usual suspects will shoot my comment down in flames, but the areas around the steelworks stink, you can see, smell and taste the pollution. Very high incidence of childhood onset asthma in Wollongong. Either pressure industry to clean up the air or continue to do nothing and leave the area as ugly, sprawling, industrial wasteland. Just don't waste our money and goodwill on grand ideas that never happen.

No matter what they do,or how much money they spend, until they get rid of the street prostitutes, and the druggies, Port Kembla won't prosper. Fancy high rise buildings won't alter the fact it is the hub for the unfortunate girls who rely on working the streets to survive.

With the ethnic diversity in and around Port Kembla, surely its a positive idea to help facilitate a 'blossoming' of those cultures in an area surrounding Wentworth Street. The days where druggies and prostitutes ruled the streets should be well and truly over, give it back to the community, do it I say!

Great Idea - Just what the town needs. Port Kembla has a lot of desirable benefits but is let down by the state and reputation of the main street.

Some of the bigger issues have not been addressed here. Firstly - what does council propose to do regarding the working girls of Port? There is evident demand for their services and they are unlikely to leave in a hurry. Is there no where safe for them to be monitored for their own well being? Secondly It is very well transposing imagery of Newtown onto Wentworth st but Newtown was gentrified over a period of time. People came for low rent, live music and a subculture scene that has olny partly been permitted to evolve in Wentworth St. Aside from the Vault there is little by way of live entertainment despite there being a high number of venues. Thirdly - what incentives do small niche businesses have to take a gamble on Port? Are there any obligations made of the owners of the buildings to maintain the buildings and to offer discounted terms to small business. If there is a genuine interest in increasing night life there could also be courtesy buses to and from Wollongong. As a resident and home owner in Port I am glad to see some interest in what could be a great main street. Just please spend any allocated money wisely.

Any ideas are great, there are some fantastic shop fronts, Wollongong Council appears to have forgotten that PK and Wentworth St exist it's all about the Blue Mile, whilst you have owners who refuse to even paint or repair their buildings, nothing will happen, The Bank has recently been renovated and it could become the standard for other buildings in this area, an Arts Precinct has been touted but with very little support it appears to have gone down the tubes so to speak, more dooers and less planners would be a great benefit to the community

how about cleaning up the working girls and drugs? the only two things that bring people to port kembla are ironically the same things that keep the rest of us away! i think council, sitting in their ivory caslte, have missed the point on this one.

The recent refurb of Wentworth St hasn't changed a thing . . . except the street looks even more desperate with the removal of all the established trees. The council needs to deal with the real problems in Port Kembla before it will attract retailers and residents.
