Free Wollongong CBD parking to disappear next month

Free Wollongong CBD parking to disappear next month

13 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
The streets of Wollongong's CBD are being prepared for the arrival of 141 parking meters which are being installed over coming weeks.

Wollongong City Council says the days of free parking on the streets of Wollongong's CBD will end on March 19 when the pay-and-display machines start operating.

The machines will service 850 of the 1440 parking spots. A $2 flat fee will apply to half-an-hour, one-hour and two-hour spots.

A Wollongong City Council spokeswoman said the flat fee was chosen because the $2 rate was not complicated and because it reflected the value and convenience.

The meters will be in operation between 9am and 6pm on weekdays and before noon on Saturdays.

Council general manager David Farmer said with almost 30 per cent of short-term parking spaces filled with all day parkers, the introduction of the machines will make it easier for council to enforce time limits and increase parking turnover.

"This will encourage those people travelling into the city centre for a whole day to use off-street parking stations or consider catching public transport," Mr Farmer said.

Mr Farmer said all money collected from the $2 flat rate pay and display machines would be spent on new off-street parking stations and improvements to footpaths, cycleways and public transport facilities.

The council is also installing free 15-minute parking spaces in front of high turnover areas, extra no parking zones where motorists can stop for two minutes to pick up and drop off, as well as free motorcycle spots.

Illawarras CBD will simply shift, people will only travel to Wollongong to visit a government department. Corrimal, Warrawong,Figtree and Shellharbour will benefit.

More like revenue turnover, It's getting like Sydney.

Goodbye Wollongong. I will now be shopping at Figtree, MacArthur Square or Miranda. I fell sorry for the small business owners. Greedy councils, wasting money in other areas such as one groundsman full time for a amatuer cricket pitch in Woonona. A joke. Parking meters will kill Wollongong CBD when there is trouble attracting people to west of the mall in the first place.

What a load of rubbish, they really think this'll make parking easier??? Wollongong Council continuing to prove why they are still 1 of the biggest jokes for acouncil in Australia.

What a Joke. What we do need Wollongong City Council is a bus hub terminal with large multistory car parks on the outskirts of wollongong. We need the new shuttle bus to go between these parking hubs and the uni, CBD, and the current free shuttle route. That way people can actually work in Wollongong instead of earning money only to lose it to the council in fines and parking fees. If the free shuttle extended further south to Port, I would definitely use it.

I always park in Wollongog Central and pay $1.50 for half an hour!... I could park outside somewhere but it's secure parking and very convenient. A $2 flat fee sounds pretty reasonable, although I can just see people rushing here to announce that they will NOT shop in Wollongong again..... These are the people who would not part with 2 bucks for anything so good luck to the big spenders, they can just drive an extra half hour to save themselves a small parking fee.....

Last week, I paid $4.30 for one hour parking in Sydney. A $2 fat rate sounds pretty reasonable and shouldn't break the bank. I guess some people will just have to get over it or choose to catch the FREE bus into town!.
