Funding for Wollongong CBD's parking woes

15 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being spent to help alleviate Wollongong's parking woes in the CBD.

Wollongong City Council has just completed a $350,000 makeover of the Thomas St car park, which provides 145 parking spaces and 13 motorcycle spaces. The spaces are leased to city workers during the week but the car park is free at night and on weekends.

While the number of car spaces has not increased, the motorcycle bays are new.

Now work has started on upgrading the Rawson St car park at the western end of the CBD, which will be expanded by 50 spaces to 208 parking spaces.

Also, construction of a new 350-space commuter car park at Wollongong Railway Station, which was promised in the state budget last month, is expected to begin by the end of the year or early next year.

"The design phase is well underway and it will have around 350 new spaces," a spokeswoman for Transport Minister David Campbell said.

The council's director of works and infrastructure, Peter Kofod, said the improvements to the two council car parks were part of the inner-city parking strategy.

About $1.8 million will be spent repairing and upgrading car parks across the Wollongong council area during the next year.

"The upgrades to the Thomas St car park include improved drainage, resurfacing, line markings, pavers and new landscaping to bring the central city car park up to current standards," Mr Kofod said.

"Council has also removed overhanging branches to prevent damage to vehicles and installed over 30 new trees and tree guards."

The improvements to the Rawson St car park - which was purchased last year to alleviate a shortage of parking spaces - include resurfacing, line marking and landscaping.

The number one game in Helensburgh is to find a parking spot as there is very little parking area. Some Council parking next to Charles Harper Park off Park St, but because the main general business section has swung around to Walker St, there is absolutely no convenient parking, except to fill Walker St to chockers. For some reason pedestrian concrete barriers were sought by a former, long ago ex- Local Area Meeting Convener, who has since moved away, taking away at least 6 parking places on Walker St. The cramming of people into the area via Landcon, and Alcatraz, Sing Sing and San Quentin highrises (local nicknames) has not kept the parking in a corresponding position.

The work on the Thomas Street car park is terrific and the Coucil Administratrors and Peter Kofod should be congratulated for such a professional job. I am curous though about the claim that there are no additional car parking spaces for two reasons. First the Council purchased the rear piece of land from 61 Smith Street awhile back to add on to the carpark, which it backed on to and second, there are now clear line marking bays between spaces so cars are no longer parking higgedly piggedly, so it certainly looks like more cars are fitting in post renovation.

To Alan Bond What has your comment to do with the Mercury's story on the Thomas Street car park? Helensburgh and Wollongong are miles apart.

Pity that width of spaces doesn't take into account increased number of large 4WD to what it was 5 or 10 years ago. Maybe if car parking spaces are so narrow there could be restriction on width of the car allowed to park?

Are there going to be parking meters in the car parks?

Using a slide rule, a white board and explaining the fact that Wollongong is not the only place under the Council, it is easy to understand that, yes, Helensburgh is miles away from the Gong, but we still pay them rates, in a lot of cases, very exorbitant (and please don't start with the you choose to live there argument) and what is required here are parking areas. I am sure a lot of suburbs with a township have the same problem. It would be nice to have Council understand that. We wouldn't mind a place even for 50 cars, rather than the main road street. On the figures above, that would only cost about $116,000. If you still don't get the relevance, it is that more people are living in the area, all up about 6,000, with Council parking unchanged in over 20 years.
