 Gay marriage battle in Throsby

Gay marriage battle in Throsby

12 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
Wollongong MP Noreen Hay has led a rebellion against Labor federal counterpart Stephen Jones, winning a key motion in his seat of Throsby which undermines his public stance on same-sex marriage.

The humiliating defeat reflects widespread anger among ALP members in Mr Jones' electorate, who feel they were not consulted about his position on the issue.

Mr Jones plans to move a private member's bill in Federal Parliament to legalise same-sex marriages, putting him at odds with senior parliamentarians including Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

On Thursday, at a meeting of ALP branch representatives, Ms Hay, representing the Dapto branch, moved a motion emphasising that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

The motion was passed, to the chagrin of Mr Jones, who was also present. It will now be sent to the federal Labor Caucus, undermining Mr Jones' credibility on the issue in Canberra.

A gag order prohibiting discussion of the motion in the media was also passed on the night. One senior ALP figure present, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Mercury Mr Jones was angry the motion succeeded.

Ms Hay would not confirm or deny whether she moved the motion, but did say: "I think it stands to reason that MPs will have different views" on same-sex marriage.

She agreed same-sex couples should be afforded the same legal rights as heterosexuals, but that marriage should remain between a man and a woman.

The issue also reflects ALP factional divides in the Throsby seat. Mr Jones is a senior member of federal Labor's Left faction while Ms Hay is the parliamentary leader of the NSW Labor Right faction.

Mr Jones' stance on same-sex marriage has exacerbated tensions in Throsby which have been brewing since he was "parachuted" into the safe seat after the departure of former member Jennie George in August 2010.

"Everyone ... is entitled to have an opinion, but he also has a responsibility to a community to gauge their community feeling," one ALP member at the meeting said.

ALP Shellharbour branch member Narelle Clay defended Mr Jones' position: "Stephen Jones' stand is a brave one and there are many examples where leadership is necessary, even if it is not the popular view," she said.

Mr Jones would not comment, because it was an internal ALP matter.

'Senior member' Stephen is convenor of Labor Left in the Fedeal parliament. Interesting the things Noreen Hay is silent on, which is most things, and the issues she does speak on which are very few. I am wondering what Bob Harrison's view is but that is wll known. Does the ALP require its Members do what the branches tell them to do in a 'conscience' vote?

Mr jones always loves to talk about his own views rather than the views of his members. I think if he bothered to talk to his members, no one would agree with him.. Marrage is between a man and a women mr jones. We don't care about your personal views mr jones, you are there to represent us your members who voted you in. Its always about you mr jones.its about time you did your job represent your members not yourself.

If Ms Hay agrees gay couples should have the same legal rights at straight couples, does that mean she supports gay adoptions and gay couples access to fertility treatment so they can reproduce? Straight couples can apply to adopt children and can access fertility treatments so if she genuinely supports everyone having the same legal rights then logically it must include these two rights as well. Mercury - ask her her position to see if its consistent with her statement here or if rank political opportunism, the temptation to stick it to Jones and curry favour with branch dinosaurs wins out.

Well done Noreen, I did not think it possible but you have outdone yourself, congratulations. Stephen Jones is a typical Labor hack who will do as he is told. This is not an issue of being homophobic, a bigot or unreasonable, it comes down to what is the meaning and intention of the word marriage. That meaning & intention has always meant a union of a man & a woman in holy matrimony. Homosexuals have the right to live together in a defacto relationship with all the rights of a married couple.

Gosh I get angry when I think about that woman. I wonder if Hay consulted with the people she represents or is she only interested in the opinions of those people that attend her fundraising dinners. Hay needs to comment and advise us what consultative measures she has undertaken prior to moving this motion.

I suppose if Jones & Hay dont have the will , desire or intellect to deal with the real issues facing the average worker & family in the Illawarra you may as well talk about gay marriage !

Since when has Stephen Jones even really been the member for Throsby?

I emailed his office about a local issue and didn't even get an email acknowledging my concerns, let alone any action.
