Glasshouse second in NSW for pub violence: report

09 Sep, 2009 12:02 PM
The Glasshouse Tavern in Wollongong has been identified as the second most violent club in the state, according to a new crime report.

The Crown St venue recorded 36 assaults between July last year and June, ranking it second on a list of the state's top 100 violent clubs compiled by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

Eight other Illawarra drinking venues also featured in the top 100 list, including the Towradgi Beach Hotel with 20 recorded assaults, and the Harp with 19 assaults.

Castros is also on the violent list with 17 recorded assaults, as are The North Wollongong Hotel with 14 assaults in 12 months, and The Illawarra Hotel and The Ivory with 13 assaults each.

The figures show Dapto Leagues Club recorded 11 assaults, as did Shellharbour Workers Club.

A spokesman for Nathan Rees said the Premier would enforce new restrictions introduced in July on any pubs or clubs in the latest list that had more than 19 assaults in the past year.

Under the new liquor laws, clubs or pubs with more than 19 assaults will also be forced to stop serving alcohol for 10 minutes once an hour after midnight or provide free water and food for 10 minutes every hour after midnight.

They will also be required to have extra security measures, will be banned from serving shots, doubles, mixed drinks that have more than five per cent alcohol and will have to limit customers to four alcoholic drinks per order.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the number of assaults in licensed venues - including glass attacks - had been reduced dramatically since the introduction of tougher liquor laws and the listing of the state's 48 most violent venues.

You funky Aussies... These laws were the biggest bummer I encountered in my whole life when spending time away from my desk in my semester abroad. Here in Germany, you'd be laughed at over serving drinks with that little amount of booze - and we have less trouble with assaults.

Can't you see that this town especially doesn't offer enough social spots to meet people? More restrictions only lead to more frustration which then lead to more violence. Binge drinking comes from such limitations as being forced to drink more in less time... Loosen up guys... apparently you promote yourselves as the surfer friendly people but in the real world do not think too good about a little weekend fun....

Two options, close the drink-holes or lock-up the offenders for very long time!

These premises were identified as being amongst the '50' most violent licensed premises in the state almost a year ago, in the last figures released by the Bureau. Why is it that nothing has been done since and why are these premises allowed to operate with impunity?

Anglo, to many blokes like u are aloud in in other words mate... why not shut the glass house down... its trouble with a capital T these new laws are not gonna work cause there just gonna get more violent if they cant get served what they want an if they are cut off for 10 minutes every hour after 12.

u need more police around these hot spots to stop the violence... and to keep these thugs where they belong.. behind bars

Apprently, pub violence arises due to excessive consumption of alcohol. Such restrictions on pubs with high incidents is good, however, I think City of Wollongong should also consider the operating hours of these sites, particularly pubs like Glasshouse Wednesday night, Harp Sunday night causes a huge amount of nuisance to the community, Wollongong City Council should consider shutting up all pubs and clubs after 12 midnight from Sunday to Thursday nights (Except Public Holidays). Those pubs should also have at least 6 police officers guarding outside the pub entrance to ensure no incident will occur for nights where these clubs will likely to be crowded.

I think the pubs should pay for extra cops to do foot patrols in the Mall at night - Security guards won't work as they do not have much arrest powers & people do not fear or respect them. The pubs cause the problems & RDL are making piles of money you could not jump over - let them pay to make the Mall safer.

in lagos they spray temporary marking paint on the faces of criminals. why not do the same to the troublemakers and throw them out of the club. no other club will let them in and the police can cruise around and can quickly spot who they need to pick up.

Why do these places need to be open till the early hours of the morning.Thse morons drink all night and sleep all day. It's time the laws were changed.Until they close at a respectable time trouble will occur

Too many white anglo bogons are allowed in. They should stick to there own areas.

That's an intelligent view Duffman - why don't you think about why there's so much violence around the clubs. It's up to individuals to control their drinking so I agree with you that the restrictions probably won't help.
