Greg Petty enters lord mayoral ring

Greg Petty enters lord mayoral ring

30 Jun, 2011 12:00 AM
Wollongong's latest nominee for lord mayor says it is what's missing from his political resume that makes him the best candidate for the city's top job.

Helensburgh resident Greg Petty, 56, yesterday said unlike most of his rivals, he was not politically aligned and had no association with the previous council, labelling himself "a fresh piece of paper" for the city's first post-administration council.

"So far we've seen candidates from the previous council, people mentioned in the Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry and nominees with party affiliations - I'm none of those," he said.

  • Our civic future: a Mercury debate

"Wollongong needs to move forward, rid itself of past scandals and get new blood in the council to restore community faith in our elected officials.

"I offer that point of difference no other candidate has offered to date."

Mr Petty, who ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate for Heathcote in this year's state election, is at the forefront of the Illawarra campaign against coal seam gas mining and is heavily involved in the protection of environmentally sensitive land around Helensburgh and Otford.

Most recently, he was a volunteer on the council's community reference panel forums, designed to enhance council consultation with the public.

Mr Petty listed preserving the Illawarra escarpment and rejuvenating Crown St Mall as some of the region's priority issues, but said if elected, he would also vote to direct more funding to the often forgotten "outer suburbs".

"Wollongong City Council residents will have in me a candidate who is skilled, experienced and prepared to represent the community, protect the environment and promote local business and employment," he said.

"I'm asking voters to judge me on my achievements in the Helensburgh area and know that I will transplant that achievement across the whole ... area."

Mr Petty's decision to stand for lord mayor has been endorsed by Neighbourhood Forum 1 convener Pauline Lacelles-Smith.

Heaven help us, another Greenie, after yesterdays performance of Bob Brown on "Meet The Press" I would say it was Mr Pettys kiss of death, I hope.

Sorry, johne, you have no idea. I actually know Greg. He is certainly not a Greenie as there are people who blame him for running in the state election and taking votes away from the Green candidate. You don't have to be a fanatically Greenie to see we can't let areas fall into the hands of land speculators now that the latest 7d Hacking River Environmentally Protected Review has come out from the Council and in certain areas favours the speculators.

Go Greg Petty, I think you will do a great job....there is no way you can do a worse job than the past Mayors....great to see someone from none of the major parties shake things up.

The way forward is for the city to support the elected and the elected to support the city. It is a Council election not a vote for the UN, NSW or federal government. Council might be a bit more than roads, rates and rubbish these days but not by much. I'll be voting for the candidates who demonstrate willingness to put the City first and political affiliations second.

Let the candidates speak and tell me what their vision for the city is. I'm prepared to listen and vote accordingly.

It would be excellent political reporting if, when nominations close, the Mercury ensured all the candidates who stand for election (both as Councillors & Mayor) have their professional resumes (including party memberships) published in a liftout so we voters can make a considered choice based not only upon reputation or rhetoric, but upon what experience & skills the candidates can bring to council. I would personally question the motives of any candidate who would didnt have the guts to do this.

    What about it Mercury ?

Petty deserves serious consideration for his previous community efforts, but there's not much likelihood of him becoming Mayor.

With such a large field of candidates, a well-established high profile is going to be essential to win this election.

For this reason, a nominee like Rod Oxley is far more likely to win than Petty.

Accordingly, if Gordon Bradbury decides to nominate for the Mayor's position, he'll be the frontrunner. For all our sakes, I hope Mr. Bradbury will live up to his positive profile.

Just Google "Greg Petty" to find his website & profile/ background, when he ran in the NSW State Election as an Independent. This gentleman is a quality Candidate for Lord Mayor based on his solid credentials. He has business acumen, an ability to work with a large workforce, experience of community involvement and relevant skills for the 'top job'. I personally met Mr Petty for the first time at the Town Hall this week alongside other Candidates & having read his website, would fully support this 'gently spoken' professional, who has all the right qualities to become our new WCC Lord Mayor.
