Gun, drug ring smashed in Illawarra: police

01 Dec, 2009 04:44 PM
Police have cracked an alleged drug and gun distribution syndicate after carrying out a series of raids on homes across the Illawarra today.

Seven men have been arrested by detectives from Strike Force Liffey, formed to investigate the ongoing supply of heroin, crystal methamphetamine and firearms in the area.

About 50 police officers were involved in today's raids at homes in Compton St and Avondale Rd at Dapto; Cringila St at Cringila; and Binya Place, Unanderra.

Five men - aged 24, 27, 36, 40 and 50 - were arrested during the execution of those search warrants.

Two other men, aged 33 and 35, were arrested by Tactical Operations Unit officers during a vehicle stop in Moran Ave, Dapto.

All seven have been taken to the Port Kembla Police Station where they are being questioned.

Lake Illawarra Local Area Commander Superintendent Mick Willing said police expected to lay more than 50 charges following today's raids.

"It's one of the largest (drug and gun syndicates) in the Illawarra area, certainly," he said.

"We allege that it has tentacles that stretch across a number of local area commands.

"I suspect it will have a large impact on drug supply and firearm supply in the Illawarra.

"We anticipate upwards of 50 charges will be laid in relation to firearms and drug supply matters.

"It's a case where a number of my dedicated and determined young detectives have painstakingly followed a number of leads over a series of months, producing impressive results."

Anyone with information about the matter is urged to contact Lake Illawarra Police on (02) 4295 2699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
