Guns in NSW: where they are ... legally

08 Feb, 2012 11:09 AM
The number of gun licences in NSW is more than 190,000 - according to the latest figures provided by NSW police.

The total number of registered guns in the state is 766,504.

This number excludes those held by gun dealers, collectors or in club armories.

smh.com.au has produced a map to show you how many gun licenses are in your suburb, and how it compares to the number of people living there.

The darker the colour on the map - the higher number of guns per capita. You can zoom in and click on areas to find out how many licences are held there.

To apply for a licence, you first have to prove you have a legitimate reason for owning one.

According to NSW Police, genuine reasons include recreational hunting, target shooting, primary production, animal control, business, animal welfare and collection.

Unsurprisingly, suburbs with the highest number of gun licenses per capita are on the semi-rural periphery of Sydney.

Inner-city and metropolitan suburbs with the highest number of guns for the population are Burwood Heights, Enfield and Strathfield south in Sydneys inner west, Edmondson Park in the south west, and Terry Hills in the north.

To find out the number of licensed guns in your suburb, click on the map.

What a load of fear-mongering! You will find that licensed firearm owners are the most law-abiding people in the country, because we know the consequences of breaking the law in relation to firearms. Instead you should be putting up a map of drive-by shootings/organised crime offences. There is NO link between the two.

Too bad the author of this article has taken the broad brush to this topic. Gun control advocates always target the easiest segment of the gun-owning population - the registered, licenced shooter! Why? Because registered and licenced shooters are the ones who have their details known to the police. Now if CRIMINALS were so kind as to register their guns too, we'd be in a better position to control them. Oh, wait! Criminals don't obey laws. Damn. So much for that idea.
