HSC '09 results: Meet the faces of the future

17 Dec, 2009 12:02 PM
They might have suffered from lack of sleep but Smith's Hill High School students Danika Wilkinson and Erin Brindley were all smiles yesterday.

The girls were both kept awake by nerves awaiting their HSC results, but their worries were unfounded as both made the NSW All-Rounders List.

"It just goes to show that if you work hard enough you can do really well," Danika said.

Next year the 18-year-old, from Austinmer, hopes to study media communications and international studies at the University of Technology, Sydney.

The HSC results came as a particular surprise to Erin, as she did best in the subject she was dreading - ancient history.

"I didn't feel confident in the exam but I scored 97 - I couldn't believe it," she said.

"There's such a big gap between exams and getting the results that it feels surreal. It's a big relief though."

Erin hopes to complete a double degree at the University of Wollongong but hasn't decided on her subjects.

Stephen Dodd kept a cool head when it came to the HSC, but admits he was still up at 6am to check his results online.

Making the all-rounders list came as a pleasant surprise to the Mt Kembla student, whose highest score was 98 in legal studies.

"I was a little bit nervous, there's always a degree of apprehension, but the HSC is not the end of the world," Stephen said. "It takes plenty of hard work if you want to do well in any endeavour and there are sacrifices to make. But it's important to keep a balance and I tried to do that."

Stephen hopes to study law at the University of Sydney next year.

Smith's Hill student Lisa Deng was also named in the NSW All-Rounders List.

Well done Smith's Hill. You have done the Public Education system proud. Just proves you don't have to spend thousands a year in a Private School to do so well. The Private Schools poach top students from the public system with scholarships to give themselves a better rank to get the rich to part with their money .

well done smiths hill - BUT - remember that smiths hill is a SELECTIVE school not a normal run of the mill public education school - to reply to 'wollongong wolf'. private schools are there for anyone - you don't have to be 'selected' and private schools are not just about the rankings, there are other factors involved. don't be so quick to judge.

Reply to "Selective" I think you will find to get to most Private Schools, you have to have the money or be selected on your ethnic or religous background. It is a fact that scholarships are offered to bright students who cannot afford private education to boost the private schools results. Why else would they other them? I think you will find many students who have made it into a selective school, get offered a place in private education. I personally know many families who have been approached. You may have to sit an exam to get to a selective high school, but it does not matter how much you have in the bank, your religion,or your ethnic background. Students who did well in the Private Education system, more than likely would of made it into a selective high school.

How about we recognise the hard work of these individual students, without entering into a private vs public school debate. People don't only send their children to private schools with the HSC in mind.
