Icy conditions for homeless sleepout in Crown St Mall

10 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
With the temperature dropping to a chilly six degrees and winds forcing cancellation of a candlelight vigil, participants in the Homeless Illawarra Winter Sleepout experienced first-hand the plight of the homeless.

Sixty-five people attended the sleepout that was held in Crown St Mall on Friday, raising $14,248 for the St Vincent de Paul Men's Shelter at Coniston and the Warilla Women's Refuge.

Organised by the South Coast City Church in Thirroul, the event was aimed at promoting awareness of the estimated 1500 homeless people in the Illawarra.

Spokesman Stuart Wilkinson said the elements proved a challenge.

"Friday afternoon we were battening down the hatches because of the wind," he said.

"We were going to light 1500 candles but had to call that off.

"The wind chill factor overnight was quite intense, but everyone braved it out."

He said 40 businesses supported the event, with 28 sponsoring boxes in which participants could sleep. Donations can still be made up to this Friday by going to www.thirroul.sccc.com.au or contacting 4268 1588.

Where is our humanity? Why are there so many of us they look down on and attack the disadvantaged. Remember if you don't help and support them you are hurting them. If you take an adversarial (Lawyer type) position with the depressed or disadvantaged, you are making their situation worse. Putting in just $2 for the charity is not supporting them, it's buying your penance. That helps but let’s get off our collective posteriors and really help them. Yes I am a bleeding heart and help feed and clothe the homeless, don't judge them and try to understand their circumstances. You can say hello to acknowledge they exist, lend a helping hand, get involved, do something, you will feel better! Unless of course you aren't worth the effort. Now there's a good question, what value do you have in our society?

One night is nothing, but lets not underestimate that our homeles always don't have a choice. If I was an alcoholic or drug addict and short of cash on the dole, what would I do? I would reduce avoidable expenses and rent is one of them.

Russ and Barry - how do you think your comments are going to help this issue - which I think you think you are doing. Yes one night is nothing to the reality of being homeless, but at least these people are trying to make a change and not just offer advice. Those sleeping out have got of their collective posteriors and are making a change – while small now, I’m sure it will build in time. If you have followed this story in the media, which I have, all the money raised (100%) has gone directly to local organisations that feed the homeless, cloth the homeless and advocate with Government to reduce housing costs. Yes it may have been a small start, but it is a start, to bring awareness to the local community of the homeless concerns we have in the Illawarra – nobody is looking down or attacking this disadvantage – it looks like this event was done with love and compassion. Hopefully others will get involved by supporting the shelters, or participating next year – instead of typing a few negative words. Congratulations to all that slept out, sponsored and supported – even the Grandparent that I am sure only had $2 to put in but wanted to help.
