Illawarra brawls posted on YouTube

15 Jun, 2009 09:58 PM
Illawarra youths are continuing to post videos of fights and brawls onto video-sharing websites such as YouTube.

In one video seen by the Mercury yesterday, 30 youths brawl at a Shellharbour park punching and pushing each other while one youth lies on the ground and is repeatedly kicked in the head.

Most of the youths in the clip appear to be about 12- to 15-years old.

Another video posted earlier this month captures a fight between two rival gangs on Queen St, Warilla and while the footage is blurry, it's still obviously brutal.

Other videos are set to music and show fights taking place on a Bomaderry sporting ground and outside a shopping centre.

Lake Illawarra Acting Inspector Brian Pedersen said the video-posters weren't doing themselves any favours as in some cases the videos could be used as evidence in court if the offenders were charged with assault.

"As part of an investigation, if there is material available that can prove or disprove the offence, the police would look at that information and if there was sufficient material there, they would have it tendered as evidence,'' Insp Pedersen said.

WARNING: This video contains coarse language

The Shellharbour park fight was posted online on November 13 last year, but because the video could have been filmed anytime in the months and weeks prior, Insp Pedersen said it was difficult to know whether anyone involved had been arrested or charged.

Checks for that date revealed no reports of a brawl in Shellharbour.

Police school and youth liaison officers work with young people on a range of issues, including the dangers of posting pictures and videos online.

They also advise young people who have video footage of fights to send it to the police in case an investigation is pending.

Insp Pedersen said he personally believed that video sharing sites such as YouTube should not allow people to post footage of fights.

"The people that moderate these sites should be vetting the information that is put on there, and anything like - youths in the street bashing people and school fights - that should just be taken off,'' he said.

"I don't see what they have to gain by allowing this stuff on internet sites, because all it is doing is promoting their bad behaviour or trying to embarrass the victim."

Are the youth of today that bored that they need to resort to acting like animals? I think that if Youtube continue to allow rubish like this to appear on their website than they should also be held accountable for any serious damage to property or persons! The trouble with todays youth is they know that our hands are tied when it comes to reprimanding them, the legal system in this country needs a complete overhaul because at the moment it's nothing more than an out of date & inadicate joke...

The videos can be back tracked to the computer that put them up. That's how bright these idiots are.

Of course the violent movies and video games that have been served up to kids for the last 15 years has had no adverse effect on their values, culture or behaviour.

None at all.

Where are these kids' parents? Half of them look too young to be out and about by themselves. How about You tube takes some responsibility and not post the fights?

i know why i moved away from all the violence in the illawarra, its becoming all to common for these young groups to act with so much violence , its only a matter of time before somebody gets killed.

Lets be honest, especially the video in Shellharbour square there are a couple of shots that if you were a parent you could recognise your own child. Come on parents get your head out of the sand and make your child accountable for their actions.

Ban all violent videos, and shame on U tube if they don't!

Perhaps Youtube should be shut down ?? Then these people would have nowhere to watch themselves. That type of behaviour can't be put down to boredom or "nothing else to do". It's just mindless thuggery at it's worst.

The Society has changed so much these days. It appears young people like these seen in this video have nothing more constructive to do. They know their rights and so therefore getaway with a slap on the wrist. The law needs to change for the better.
