500 in mourning over lost cyclistKiama Triathlon Club secretary Peter McMullan said Saturday's ride was an overwhelming experience.
"There were people from the Southern Highlands and Gerringong and Berry," he said. "One in 10 would've known Jason.
"They all turned up because they felt it was a bit of them on the roadside there."
At the crash site, Mr Stortz's wife, Kylie, and their 16-month-old son, Harry, gathered with cyclists to lay flowers and a cross with Mr Stortz's ironman medal affixed to it.
"There was a lot of respect," Mr McMullan said.
"It was like a brotherhood. We're out there, we're fairly vulnerable but all together.
"We were really proud of how many people turned up."
A collection was taken up for Mrs Stortz and Harry and a minute's silence was held in Mr Stortz's honour.
Mr McMullan said Marshall Mount Rd had become a popular road among cyclists because it has traditionally been considered safe, and no time was considered safer than on a Saturday morning.
"It's one of the most popular rides we do," he said.
"Everyone was shocked."
