ILLAWARRA FLOODS: Cars, homes inundated

10 Feb, 2012 05:54 PM
Heavy rain and flash flooding caused havoc overnight when 99mm of rain fell in parts of the region.

Further heavy rain is expected today and the State Emergency Service (SES) has advised residents to prepare for potential flash flooding further south on the coast.

A spokeswoman for the Bureau of Meteorology said the rain was isolated, with 99mm falling at Balgownie but only 34mm at Bellambi.

SES Illawarra region controller Greg Murphy said his crews received 60 calls between 10.30pm and midnight.

‘‘A number of those calls were to assist people who had water going through their house or were trapped in their vehicles,’’ he said.

‘‘Luckily the water dissipated almost as fast as it came up.’’

At North Wollongong, drivers had to be rescued from their cars which were inundated with water.

The North Wollongong PCYC suffered extensive damage, with club manager Michael Jones describing the situation as a ''huge blow''.

It remained uncertain whether insurance would cover a repair bill that could run into the tens of thousands, he said.

The debris discovered this morning illustrated the power of the flood waters; a shipping container on a building site in Virginia St, North Wollongong was swept along in the flood water and almost washed into Fairy Creek.

Fire and Rescue NSW and Wollongong police were called to assist the SES.

Acting Sergeant Paul Fitzpatrick said police attended 42 jobs .

‘‘We had a lot of cars floating down Stewart St. They were floating from one roundabout to the next,’’ he said.

Heavy rain also fell overnight at Foxground, which recorded 92mm of rain.

A severe thunderstorm warning which included a western part of the Illawarra has been cancelled.

The SES has prepared for potential flash flooding in the Bega and Moruya areas later today.

Clean the creeks WCC said somebody. Why has to be the council and not the people living nearby to look for some community job in protecting themselves. Why to cry all the time about the council and not to the people dumping the rubbish? Make wonder and I am not a council employee..

@ S Rued, the everyday residents do not own excavators or tippers to remove the reeds and green waste that grows.

I'll clean the creeks when the council comes to clean up my house. Oh wait, the house is mine so it's my responsibility to clean it, and the creeks belong to the council so it's their responsibility to clean them. I pay annual council rates of about $1,500 to look after the community - how silly me to expect them to do something to benefit the environment and the community with that money.

Never ending story with reeds and costs. How about we stop Councillors flying on overseas trips wasting our rates money and spend the money on something useful like creeks maintenance?

@jimmy - quite a high percentage of the creeks are privately owned

It was the Rugby League gods reminding Wollongong what happens when you mess with the Steelers. They got the can in 1998 and the rain fell then. Now, when you have the chance to revive them, you call the team the Cutters and this happens.

Come on mighty Wollongong, let's bring them back and stop the floods.

What a great society some of the Gong has become. It is always somebody else's fault. Where's the spirit of the Queensland floods. If the householders did the right thing in the first place and dobbed in the mindless people who dump rubbish in and near local streams we would be a lot closer to resolving the overall problem.

Take some responsibility - Dob in a Dumper. The Council can't be everywhere all of the time.
