A helicopter winched two injured sailors from a ship anchored off Port Kembla yesterday in a dramatic rescue. The rescue mission involved two helicopters which were called about 12.30pm to the United Treasure anchored three nautical miles out, just north of Tom Thumb Island. The ambulance received a report of two sailors suffering multiple fractures and spinal injuries. The sailors, aged in their 20s, were believed to have fallen into the bulk carrier's hold. Two special operations paramedics flown to the ship were winched down to treat and stabilise the men.The helicopters were forced to return to land to conserve fuel while the paramedics prepared the sailors for transport.About 2.30pm one helicopter flew back to the ship and winched up the two sailors before a second helicopter flew out to retrieve the paramedics. The injured men were flown to Wollongong Hospital and admitted to the emergency department. One man was treated for a possible fractured arm and spinal injuries and the other for fractures to both legs. Both sailors were in a stable condition last night.
