Jinks, steps and sledges: Wendell Sailor steals Twenty20 show

23 Nov, 2009 03:51 PM
Recently retired Dragons hero Wendell Sailor may have found a new career while playing a celebrity Twenty20 match at University Oval on Saturday.

Although a starring all-round performance from Sailor, who ended his NRL career just 11 days ago, wasn't enough to get his Town side up against their Gown opponents, it seemed a new life on the lucrative Twenty20 circuit beckoned.

The dual international hammered 20 off 14 balls before snaring wickets with his first two balls to finish with a match-best 3-8.

Although those efforts may have pricked up ears in Twenty20 hotbeds such as India and impressed guest of honour Adam Gilchrist, Sailor will return to training with the Dragons today until the NRL versus Indigenous All-Star game in February.

Sailor's electrifying performance, complete with trademark jinks, steps and sledges, added spark to the carnival atmosphere at one of the major events of Gilchrist's two-day visit to Wollongong.

The former Kangaroos and Wallabies winger hit three boundaries as the Town side - skippered by former Test cricketer Dean Jones - racked up 8-123 batting first. He then knocked over Wollongong Hawks assistant coach Matt Flinn and ex-team-mate Creagh with consecutive balls before the Gown got home with seven balls to spare.

Although Sailor hogged the spotlight, opposing captain Jason Gillespie, owner of 259 Test wickets and a double century, was the hero for the Gowns with an unbeaten 45, including two towering sixes in the final over, delivered by former Test quick Greg Campbell.

Wonderwoman to Gillespie's Batman was Australian representative Mel Jones, who crunched 30 before being dismissed by a screaming catch from ASP World Tour event-winning surfer Mick Lowe.

The exploits of Sailor and Gillespie were no surprise given their sporting backgrounds, but ex-Wiggle Greg Page had cricket insiders buzzing with a mix of textbook and agricultural shots to finish with an unbeaten 17 off 23 balls for the Town.

Gilchrist managed to get into the action by taking a spectacular catch in the front row of the stands to claim Campbell.

As cute as Riley may be, it is a shame the Mercury didn't feather a photo of one of the Milo In2cricket PLAYERS whom Adam Gilchrist actually came to see. If the child was wearing the Milo uniform, it also would be another plug for Milo who inverst so much into Junior Cricket and deserve the extra promotion.
