Job losses 'inevitable' in WIN, ABC hook-up

Job losses 'inevitable' in WIN, ABC hook-up

07 Jul, 2009 09:58 AM
WIN Corporation is entering into a joint venture with the ABC to centralise operations as it explores new digital TV broadcasting opportunities.

In a move designed to capitalise on present and future standard definition and high definition broadcast requirements, the joint-venture company will build a digital, non-linear play-out facility between Wollongong and Sydney.

WIN and ABC said they could see economic benefits in sharing the resources and expenses needed to build a shared facility.

However, WIN Corporation managing director David Butorac told employees that changes to the way WIN broadcasts would mean changes to staffing and indicated redundancies would be inevitable.

The companies plan to migrate all channel broadcasts to the new play-out centre within 12 months.

WIN expected many staff to seek employment opportunities within the joint-venture facility and the company said that it would work to secure ongoing employment for affected staff in cases where that was not possible.

Existing expertise within the two organisations will be used to design, build, operate and maintain the custom-designed hi-tech facility, which is expected to be the largest of its kind in the country.

It will run as a completely separate business, servicing the broadcasting needs of both the ABC and WIN.

There will also be potential for the play-out facility to provide broadcast services to other TV providers.

WIN management is presently working in consultation with employees in broadcast operations and associated areas, ahead of a changeover to the new facility next year.

Maybe now, the northern suburbs of Helensburgh and district will be able to watch the WIN News and the other Gong stations, as barely anyone up here can receive them, though Stanwell Park has a repeater set up, but no other suburb.

Would this be available through AUSTAR as the ABC is now? As a matter of fact we barely receive any local newspapers as well. Remember, advertisers actually think their paid ads are reaching homes up here through the local tv and newspapers media.

Any merger must give reduced resources and staff, otherwise it would not make savings or profit. Current climate that capital is short and job losses expected is ideal to shed few staff without too much drama. This is how it is, we have more and more people, with less and less places to employ them.

Aunty getting into bed with Uncle WIN? I can't believe it is happening. Observer, I lived at Coalcliff for many years and had a specially high aerial which got me all channells available at that time. My former neighbour 2 doors south cannot even now use his mobile phone at Coalcliff.

What happens if the "facility" goes "off" for whatever reason - loss of two networks?

Some northern homes right on the actual coast can receive WIN, I could even pick it up at Bondi when I lived there, but places just inland and up high like Helensburgh, can not. I think people would prefer tall trees than very tall tv antennas, that's why the Austar dishes would be better as they are small and low on the roof. But to get the high definition free to air channels (except ABC and SBS) through Austar, one has to pay Austar $14.95 a month!! So much for free to air! I think they have a name for it.

WOW. You would have to pay me $14.95 a month to force me to have the "free to air" channels on tap.
