John Dorahy is expected to gain Liberal Party preselection this weekend to run for Wollongong lord mayor.
Although a NSW Liberal Party spokesman would not confirm or deny Mr Dorahy's selection, the Mercury understands he will be chosen.
Mr Dorahy, a rugby league great, was defeated by the ALP's Ryan Park in the seat of Keira at the last state election.
The spokesman said Liberal Party nominees for lord mayoral and councillor positions for the September 3 local government poll would be decided by the state executive this weekend and revealed on Monday.
Preselection ballots for the ALP will be held tomorrow. An ALP spokesman said his party would field 12 candidates, four in each ward, together with a lord mayoral contender.
Meantime, the Community Voice political group is continuing to experience problems with four candidates opting out of the ticket since last Sunday's preselection. Twelve candidates were announced, but the list was cut to 11 when former Wollongong councillor Andrew Anthony withdrew, saying he was unimpressed with the group's nomination and voting processes.
Candidate Rob Carr said that since Mr Anthony's withdrawal, three more candidates had pulled out.
In Ward 1, candidates Jess Moore and Chris Williams would remain, after Peter Cockroft and Mike Donaldson had withdrawn.
"Mike and Peter felt there may be better candidates who would have a stronger chance in Ward 1," Mr Carr said.
In Ward 2, the candidates are Mr Carr and Adam Jordan, with Mr Anthony and Ian Young withdrawing.
For Ward 3, Adrianne Talbot-Thomson, Robynne Murphy and Bruno Conte will stand, however Romeo Cecchele has withdrawn to run on his own.
Mr Carr said a preselection to fill the vacancies would be held tomorrow at Port Kembla Leagues Club while a mayoral candidate would also be named.
