John Dorahy likely to lead Libs' council assault

30 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
John Dorahy is expected to gain Liberal Party preselection this weekend to run for Wollongong lord mayor.

Although a NSW Liberal Party spokesman would not confirm or deny Mr Dorahy's selection, the Mercury understands he will be chosen.

Mr Dorahy, a rugby league great, was defeated by the ALP's Ryan Park in the seat of Keira at the last state election.

The spokesman said Liberal Party nominees for lord mayoral and councillor positions for the September 3 local government poll would be decided by the state executive this weekend and revealed on Monday.

Preselection ballots for the ALP will be held tomorrow. An ALP spokesman said his party would field 12 candidates, four in each ward, together with a lord mayoral contender.

Meantime, the Community Voice political group is continuing to experience problems with four candidates opting out of the ticket since last Sunday's preselection. Twelve candidates were announced, but the list was cut to 11 when former Wollongong councillor Andrew Anthony withdrew, saying he was unimpressed with the group's nomination and voting processes.

Candidate Rob Carr said that since Mr Anthony's withdrawal, three more candidates had pulled out.

In Ward 1, candidates Jess Moore and Chris Williams would remain, after Peter Cockroft and Mike Donaldson had withdrawn.

"Mike and Peter felt there may be better candidates who would have a stronger chance in Ward 1," Mr Carr said.

In Ward 2, the candidates are Mr Carr and Adam Jordan, with Mr Anthony and Ian Young withdrawing.

For Ward 3, Adrianne Talbot-Thomson, Robynne Murphy and Bruno Conte will stand, however Romeo Cecchele has withdrawn to run on his own.

Mr Carr said a preselection to fill the vacancies would be held tomorrow at Port Kembla Leagues Club while a mayoral candidate would also be named.

I believe that ALL groups running for Council should be independent and not be apparently "associated" with other groups. By this I mean, the Community Voice, should be that alone, the Greens should be that alone, same with Liberals, Labor (remember them? and remember them), the Mefirst Guy, (you can decide who that is), absolutely Independent and even the Mickey Mouse Club, with 1. Mickey, 2. Donald, 3. Goofy, 4. Daisy 5. Pluto on the ticket, and you can decide who they are on election day when you vote for them. Even Osama, Hitler, Saddam, and Gaddafi would get more votes.

Community Voice or Community Manipulation? Looks like the smart money is pulling out in the nick of time. I hope Jess and Chris wake up FAST.

If the Libs are fair dinkum about having a go in the Illawarra they need to come up with better candidates - Johns lack of substance and political know how was clearly on show at the last election....which is why he lost.

I read that Rod Oxley is running for Lord Mayor of Wollongong as well. Bahahaha that's the funniest thing I've heard in ages. And for goodness sake Wollongong - when will you learn that the ALP will only continue to take you for granted, disappoint you and deliver nothing?

I agree with Mr Bond, however there are the cloaked greenies hiding behind groups such as " The Community Voice" A Leopard does not change its spots and Michael Organ ran as a Greens candidate in another election and now because the Greens are so badly on the nose chooses to call himself an Independant and there are others as well. The Greens are more of a threat than either Labor or Liberal having in mind they are being directed by the chief looney Bob Brown. I note that in todays Mercury the majority of candidates are Greenies. Voters beware.

Is Mr Bond's comment meant to to be funny, or meaningful? I am not sure why is so confident of knowing what is best, and being critical of the intentions and efforts of everyone else? The fact is in our preferential system - and the mayoral vote is compulsory preferential unless I am wrong - no candidate or voter can be alone above the fray. You need to rank all candidates, and as candidate usually give advice accordingly to voters.

In the NSW State and Local government elections, the voting system is "Optional Preferential" which means the voter can fully decide how their preferences are distributed. What is printed on the "How to Vote" handed out at polling places is just the candidate’s suggestion on how you should vote. For the Lord Mayoral vote in Wollongong you can choose to number just 1 box or as many as you like. Sadly the misleading “Just Vote 1” signs on display at polling places during the last state election caused a lot of angst and confusion among voters. My advice, read the instructions on the Ballet paper
