A ultralight plane tried to pick up horsepower with an emergency landing on the back straight of Kembla Grange Racecourse on Saturday.A male pilot and his passenger, a woman aged in her mid-20s, were forced to land at 2.30pm after the plane began experiencing difficulties.David Sadd, who operates South Coast Golf Academy at the course, said he was surprised to look up and see the plane landing on the track.‘‘We were in the middle of the race course and it was just by chance I’ve looked across and said to one of the boys, ‘Did anyone see that?’.’’ options={AutoStart:false,DefaultQuality:"High",PlayerWidth:463,PlayerHeight:260}He said the pilot, who operates out of Illawarra Regional Airport, was on a joy flight when it appeared the plane began to run out of fuel.‘‘He said the tank was still showing a third full but then it just started coughing and spluttering over Wollongong and that’s when they glided in,’’ Mr Sadd said. The pilot put in an emergency call for aviation fuel from Albion Park then successfully restarted the plane.‘‘He was off the ground within 100 to 150m. The young woman didn’t get back in, though. She got a lift back with person who delivered the fuel.’’Jill Bailey, assistant operations manager for Recreational Aviation Australia, said it was still uncertain what caused the 80hp plane to experience difficulties.Ms Bailey said pilots were trained to look for an open space during times of trouble.‘‘So the pilot has done exactly what he’s been trained to do and it’s been successfully carried out. There’s no damage, no injuries’’ she said.
