Kaylee's miracle wedding

11 Feb, 2008 04:00 AM
The marvels of medical technology allowed Kaylee Gleeson to marry Josh Kelly as planned at the weekend.

She strode proudly down the aisle at her wedding ceremony, held together by metal rods and screws.

Six months ago the 22-year-old Blackbutt beauty therapist broke her back in three places while attempting a motorcycle jump at a racetrack in Nowra.

"I was racing with Josh and friends when I flipped on a jump," Kaylee said.

"I couldn't breathe, let alone move, and had to be rushed to Shoalhaven Hospital by ambulance with spinal injuries."

Tests showed breaks in three places and it took doctors a week to assess if she would walk again.

Kaylee underwent surgery to insert two steel rods and 10 metal screws in her spine.

"A wedding at that stage was the furthest thing from my mind, but it was clearly worrying everybody who visited," Kaylee said.

But as the date drew closer Kaylee grew a little stronger and more confident that her and Josh's wedding day would proceed as planned.

"I'm now used to a certain amount of pain and the busier I am the worse it gets," she said.

"But I was determined to push through and have the day we had dreamed about.

"I've learned to walk pretty close to normal, so the only visible reminder was the scar peeping out of the top of my dress."
