Keneally blames MPs for her falling popularity

26 Aug, 2010 10:21 AM
The Premier, Kristina Keneally, has lashed out at her misbehaving MPs and blamed them for a disastrous poll result that revealed the collapse of her once-buoyant satisfaction rating.

The poll, which showed Ms Keneally's satisfaction rating has fallen eight points to 39 per cent, coincided with a threat from her minister for the Hunter, Jodi McKay, not to recontest her seat after the abandonment of a redevelopment plan for the Newcastle CBD.

But while the Premier vowed yesterday to begin rebuilding trust by announcing policies in the coming months, the message was undermined by renewed disquiet over the likely appointment of her chief-of-staff, Walt Secord, to the Legislative Council.

  • VOTE: Is Premier Kristina Keneally justified in blaming her MPs for her government's falling popularity?

Mr Secord, who worked as a media manager for the former premier Bob Carr and the former prime minister Kevin Rudd, is being backed by Ms Keneally and Labor head office to take the seat vacated by the former health minister John Della Bosca.

However, a senior Labor source attacked the appointment of Mr Secord as ''a joke''.

He said that after the federal election result there was widespread concern over the message that installing a figure known for his expertise in manipulating the media but with little policy experience would send to the electorate.

''Labor can't spin to save itself in office and now wants to spin its way back into office from opposition,'' he told the Herald.

The Newspoll put Ms Keneally's satisfaction rating at 39 per cent, which brings her level with the NSW Opposition Leader, Barry O'Farrell. On a two-party preferred basis, Labor continues to trail the Coalition by 61 to 39.

The poll is a blow for Labor as Ms Keneally's satisfaction rating has until now remained high since she became Premier, offsetting a poor primary vote.

Questioned about the poll, she blamed the behaviour of the former Penrith MP Karyn Paluzzano and the former state development minister Ian Macdonald, who both quit Parliament after scandals, and the Cessnock MP, Kerry Hickey, who revealed he had fathered a child with a parliamentary staff member.

  • ''There are too many examples of ill-disciplined behaviour among individual members of Parliament and it destroys people's confidence and people's trust that the government is focusing on their needs.

''I say this very clearly: if that sort of ill-discipline continues, the blunt reality is that we will lose the election,'' she said.

Ms Keneally said she had spoken to Ms McKay about her suggestion to the Newcastle Herald that she may not contest next year's election after the property trust GPT pulled out of a planned redevelopment of the Newcastle CBD, blaming state government inaction.

However, one MP told the Herald that it might be a case of Ms McKay seeing ''the writing on the wall''. Ms McKay faces a strong threat from the lord mayor of Newcastle, John Tate, who reduced her margin to 1.2 per cent at the 2007 election.

Mrs Keneally is probably a nice lady and impressed Mr Roozendaal emough to make sure she got preselection before the Breretons but she must be delusional if she thinks that the motley crew she leads will be re-elected. The real fun will start with the Royal Commission.

You just don't get it KK. Look past the mis-behaving pollies and you will see the lack of deliverables for the state that has driven the voters against you. It's time to get rid of these clowns and get the state back in order.

MPs from both sides have been misbehaving for years; just that Labors' MPs have misbehaved in somewhat more spectacular, and sensational, ways in recent years as they have become deluded into thinking they don't have to answer to anyone, not even the electorate. Kristina, new policies ( or rehashed promises) won't rescue NSW Labor. A good clean out of say 90-95% of your very, very, stale colleagues with fresh young people who just might know right from wrong will go a long way.

No mention of the public transport ticketing fiasco? No mention of the public transport planning fiasco? No mention of the lack of money to keep Bulli hospital runnning properly but plenty of money for a new footy field grandstand? No mention of the anti-community Part3A approval process?

Another way to look at is, we won World War 2 because we made less mistakes than the other side. Politics is the same. Unfortunately they're both on our side... but hey, Barry will get in and it will be an interesting change... maybe we'll get the F6 extension.....

So is this the 'real' Kristina we are seeing now? Someone who is willing to point the finger at the Premier of Queensland, then Kevin Rudd, then her own MPs, rather than accepting responsibility for these things herself? Wake up Labor - there is a massive tsunami coming your way next March and you'll be lucky to have any seats after it hits you.

In another time and another place Kristina Keneally could and should have been a great Premier. But she took the captaincy of a ship that has too many holes and is sinking. If the state Labor Govt suddenly solved all the states problems and had enough money left over for everybody to get a cheque for a $1 million they'd still be voted out at the next election. People have made their minds up already and nothing is going to change them. This presents a major problem for the state because waiting in the other corner is Barry and the Libs. A seriously shallow gene pool. They don't have to do anything. So certain are they of victory that they could all go on holiday till the next election. Once they're in they just keep saying what a terrible mess they inherited and that will get them through the following election. NSW you're in for a rough time.
