Kerryn McCann dies after cancer battle

08 Dec, 2008 04:44 PM
Dual Commonwealth Games gold medalist Kerryn McCann has died after losing her second battle with cancer.

The 41-year-old from Coledale passed away early this morning.

McCann leaves behind her husband, Greg, and three children, Josie, 4, Benton, 10 and Cooper, 1.

The champion marathon runner successfully fought her first health battle in 2007, after surgeons removed a cancerous tumour from her breast. She began chemotherapy in September that year and by May had thrown away her wig and resumed her rigorous jogging routine.

``There was a time I thought I would die, that I would never see my children grow up,'' she told the Mercury earlier this year.

``I am happy and relieved to be able to pull on a pair of running shoes again, but cancer changes your priorities.''

But four months ago, Mr McCann confirmed that his wife was again being treated by doctors, this time for a secondary cancer in her liver. Sadly it was a battle she did not win.

McCann and Jane McGrath, wife of the Australian fast bowler Glenn, supported each other through their cancer battles.

Mrs McGrath died in June.

I was sad to learn of this sad outcome - doubly so as she leaves a young family.

Even with modern medicine and her competitive spirit, drive and fitness this silent killer took another young life.

There are still people who seem oblivious to its existence, and don't know what to say when they meet a cancer sufferer (or survivor), but thanks to the drive of the Cancer Council and support groups the ignorence is being educated and funds are being raised for research and for sufferers.

Look at the success of the recent Convoy of Kids.

RIP Kerryn. Our family's heart goes out to Greg, Josie, Benton and Cooper.

We recently lost a very loved friend to pancreatic cancer, so we understand what they are going through. Our prayers go out towards you in this hard time.

I am shocked and terribly saddened to hear of the beautiful Kerryn's passing.

Kerryn always took the time to make time to talk, to smile, to enquire and to make me feel everything was going to be okay.

Kerryn, I looked to you for inspiration and to be reminded of what was and is the best way to conduct myself as an athlete.

I know you are in the most incredible place 100%. V
