Kevin Rudd's Berkeley hall top of class

07 May, 2009 10:53 AM
Ready for construction 151 years after students first arrived, the hall that Rudd built couldn't come soon enough for Berkeley Public School.

The school is one of 35 primary schools in the region that will share in new infrastructure projects worth $70 million, funded by the Federal Government.

New halls, classrooms, libraries and outdoor learning areas will be built at the primary schools.

For Berkeley Public this will mean both parents and students will be able to attend indoor functions at the school for the first time.

At present, the school's 340 students cram into two adjoining classrooms for assemblies and there is no room for anyone else.

Principal Jan Hagan had submitted 18 separate applications to the Government after hearing about Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's school spending spree. Leftover cash from the hall will be spent on a list of other maintenance jobs.

"I just couldn't let a wonderful opportunity like this go past," Ms Hagan said.

Berkeley's $2.5 million grant comes on top of $150,000 provided by the Federal Government last month for painting and upgrades.

Other big winners in round one of the Primary Schools for the 21st Century stimulus initiative include The Illawarra Grammar School ($2.5 million for a multi-purpose hall), Unanderra Public School ($3 million for classrooms) and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School at Kiama ($2.5 million for hall and classrooms).

All up, the project will see $12.4 billion spent on primary schools across Australia through three rounds of funding.

Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard said government schools would receive 69.7 per cent of the total funding, Catholic schools 19.6 per cent and independent schools the rest.

It was the Government's intention that all Australian primary schools would receive some funding, Ms Gillard said.

  • Cunningham Labor MP Sharon Bird said it was the largest ever modernisation spend on schools.

But Gilmore Liberal MP Joanna Gash said Illawarra companies must be used for the projects to address the region's growing unemployment problem.

"If they don't use local builders and contractors ... my message will be the stimulus package wasn't any great use apart from for schools," she said.

The Mercury understands Sydney-based company Richard Crookes Constructions has been selected to project manage Illawarra-based work.

Throsby MP Jennie George said she and Ms Bird would meet the company to "ensure as much of the work as possible is kept within the region".

Interested contractors in the region should contact their relevant MP. First round projects must be completed by December 20, 2010.

Well done Mr. Rudd [and thanks to our MP's Mrs J George and Ms K Bird] for this benefit to Berkeley. Just in time for their 151st Anniversary.

Great to see money being spent in one of my old schools. I think some of the buildings I was in over 50 years ago are still there.
