Labor loses slender lead on crucial two-party vote

31 Aug, 2010 11:32 AM
Labor has lost its hold on the national two-party preferred vote, one of the key elements Julia Gillard has relied on to argue her party has the better right to form a minority government.

Late last night, Labor's two-party lead had dramatically turned into a deficit of about 1900 votes - with nearly 10.7 million counted.

The Coalition now leads on both the primary and two-party vote.

Last week, when Labor held a healthy lead in the popular vote, Ms Gillard argued this gave her party superiority in the quest to form government.

One of the four independents holding the nation's future in his hands condemned both the main parties as he warned he might not support either when he announces his decision in coming days.

Andrew Wilkie, the Tasmanian independent who met Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott yesterday, decried both parties as one of Ms Gillard's signature claims to retaining power - a superior two-party-preferred vote - disappeared.

Mr Wilkie released a list of 20 ''priorities'' that would cost billions of dollars to implement and said both parties had to do more to win his support.

''I note that in the last few months, the Labor government has been neither stable, competent or ethical, and I'm yet to be persuaded that the opposition can do any better,'' he said.

Both sides consider Mr Wilkie crucial in generating momentum because he will decide as early as tomorrow, while the other three - Tony Windsor, Bob Katter and Rob Oakeshott - will not decide until the end of the week at the earliest.

Last night the rural trio met Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott.

Ms Gillard, who will make another public pitch today at the National Press Club, presented them with Labor's plan to reform Parliament and crack down on political donations and advertising, as they requested.

With negotiations reaching the critical stage, demands flowed thick and fast.

The West Australian National Tony Crook stressed he was independent and not part of the Coalition. He attended a Nationals party room meeting in Canberra and, in return for his support, demanded $860 million in royalties be funnelled to WA each year, plus more GST revenue.

Without Mr Crook's support, Mr Abbott's Coalition can lay claim to only 72 seats.

The Green, Adam Bandt, has pledged to support Labor, giving it 73 seats. A majority of 76 is needed.

Mr Wilkie said renovations to Royal Hobart Hospital and betting limits on poker machines were his main demands. He said both leaders had been ''receptive''. He said a humane asylum-seeker policy was paramount. He said he did not like the Liberals' hardline policy approach and Labor's was not much better.

His priority list, which he stressed were not demands, included infrastructure projects for Tasmania, worth an estimated $2 billion, increased pensions and other welfare payments, a publicly funded dental scheme and a conscience vote on gay marriage.

The Nationals, who have been shut out of negotiations with the independents, flexed their muscles by holding a party room meeting to show off their 12 MPs and six senators, an increase of four in total.

The relationships between the Nationals and the independents, especially Mr Katter, are poisonous but the Nationals leader, Warren Truss, believed this to be surmountable for the good of the nation.

By Gillards own reckoning Abbott should be Prime Minister now. Resign.

Given the unrealistic nature of demands by the Greens and various Independents it would seem that they also want to govern, or at least hold both parties to ransom in return for their vote. Perhaps both major parties should talk to each other before they get into an expensive auction, which this country can ill afford. Labor and the Liberals need to quickly sideline the Greens, Independents and Nationals.

So Convict, you're happy (apparently like the majority of Illawarra voters) for the country to keep going backwards (not forwards) under the current regime? So tell me, just what has the Labor Party, both State and Federal, done for the Illawarra? Why is the unemployment rate down here so bad? Why are our facilities crumbling? You see, things won't change unless people stop voting blindly (like their parents, and their parents parents...) for the Labor Party. Whilst ever they keep getting elected decade after decade, they have no need or motivation to direct any attention down here. Are people really that stupid that they can't see that???? markjuliansmith, spot on. But will the Real Julia make that decision after the people of our nation have spoken?

Really, you talk rot. It was the Libs who were in for 12 years, thats why the country is in the mess it's in.If you are talking State , I whole heartedly agree with you. Labor didn't have time to do much of anything as they were only in one term, and the resession hit. If the Libs get back in under the leadership onf Tony Abbott, god help the low income earners , the unemployed, and the Pensioners..It's damn hard to survive now, but it's a walk in the park to what it will be under Abbott.

grannie annie, you've missed the point. The coalition has also faltered in delivering to the Illawarra too, simply because they probably see no reason to inject serious funding here when the people continue to blindly vote Labor. We'll only get to see the area getting the attention it deserves when either the Labor Party thinks it will lose the safest seats in the country or the Coalition has a sniff of winning them. Take Eden-Monaro for example...how much advertising did you see on TV for that seat alone? Tons. And for Throsby and Cunningham? Absolutely zero, which is why we'll again get left out of the serious funding and future development talks. Speaking of messes, look at the wasted BILLIONS the Labor Govt flushed on the Insulation scheme and BER. They PANICKED and wasted billions on poorly developed and implemented schemes. Then there's Grocery watch, Petrol watch (bet neither of these last 2 has fallen in price, yet look at the money wasted in the process). And if we get Labor's ETS, then come back and tell me how much harder it is to survive when the price of EVERYTHING goes up! So tell me, just what will Abbott do to make it harder for you? And don't say WorkChoices...:?

@really- you sound like a fairly educated person, but where did you loose you memory? Remember that it was the tory's who were in power for 12 years, and did what? Cut spending in education, health, infastructure, employment, real wages for the real workers, sold off telstra and other country assets, gave themselves payrises, bigger super payouts, better lerks and perks in retirement, bigger pensions for themselves, and should I keep going? The tory's motto is: lets take what we can for ourselves now, and bugger the rest of the people. Do you really think that tony RABBITT could run this country? He couldn't run a piss-up in a brewry! He just shows that not all 'peanuts' come in a bag.

Hell, I thought we have just got over weeks of this juvenile crap. How about a sensible resolution - cream buns at 15 paces.

Ah, convict, how is it wearing your labor party blinkers?? How anyone can say that the last government did a good job is beyond me. The labor party is nothing more than a group of back room union cronies, forming policy to suit their own personal wants and needs. I wont start on their failed policies because there isn't enough space!!!! Do us all a favor Julia, leave and take your incompetent followers with you
