Lake Heights' great Ugg boot heist

Lake Heights' great Ugg boot heist

16 Mar, 2010 11:05 AM
A giant Ugg boot has temporarily taken up residence in Albion Park among an Aladdin's cave of stolen goods seized from two Lake Heights addresses at the weekend.

Just months after suggestions the town should embrace its bogan pride and install an Ugg boot monument, a sizeable boot has fallen into custody and is now under guard at Albion Park Police Station.

Police believe the novelty boot, along with an array of perfumes, jewellery, homewares products, clothing and expensive sheets, with an estimated value of $85,000, were stolen by members of a sophisticated shoplifting ring based in the Illawarra.

Lake Illawarra Inspector John Klepczarek yesterday said police had been alerted to the stash after a woman and two young females were arrested at Yass with 3000 allegedly stolen items in their car.

After interviewing the females, believed to be returning to the Illawarra from the Riverina region, police were directed to a home in Ranchby Ave, Lake Heights, where a large volume of items valued at $80,000 were located.

From information obtained at the residence, police were then directed to a nearby home in Buena Vista Ave where a cache of jewellery and clothing with an estimated value of $5000 was detected.

Insp Klepczarek said it appeared the items had been stolen from a number of locations, the thieves recruiting young accomplices to target a range of retail outlets.

"A lot of the items have come from the Illawarra but we also believe some of the items have come from other parts of the state including the Snowy Mountains," he said.

A 44-year-old woman was charged with goods in custody and shoplifting and was granted conditional bail to appear at Yass Local Court on April 6.

Two 15-year-old girls were charged with shoplifting offences and granted conditional bail.

A 58-year-old Lake Heights man will be issued with a future court attendance notice in relation to the haul.

All people with shoplifting problems should wear special bracelets to trigger security alert when they enter the shops. At least shoppers would be alerted to known offenders and either keep an eye on them or ask to leave. Let’s put some pressure on criminals!

surely the even the mercury can come up with a more creative headline than resurrecting the stupid Ugg boot and Bogan thing. Albion Park is a splendid rural township. Leave it alone.

I am sure they will get off wih a slap on the wrist. Makes me sick just how protected criminals are. Doing the right thing doesn't matter anymore.
