Leadership issue puts Throsby in hot seat

18 Nov, 2009 11:08 AM
Speculation over a possible replacement for Throsby MP Jennie George continues to cause a stir among rank-and-file Labor Party members.

On Monday night the Albion Park-Oak Flats branch, one of the electorate's largest, became the latest to demand a pre-selection process amid concerns an ALP factional deal will see Community and Public Sector Union national secretary Stephen Jones installed.

Chairman of the Albion Park-Oak Flats branch and former Shellharbour City mayor David Hamilton said the issue had galvanised the membership, even though Ms George was yet to decide her future.

  • Will this man replace Jennie George in Throsby?

  • Bitter debate divides the ALP

Mr Hamilton said while members were backing Ms George "100 per cent" if she wanted to stay, a resolution was passed that "active members of the branch believe they should be given a right to a say over who should be leading us in the future".

Mr Hamilton said the meeting at the Albion Park Bowling Club attracted "a fair turnout for this time of year" with many angered by the comments of the Australian Workers Union Port Kembla branch secretary and Labor Party member Andy Gillespie.

Last week Mr Gillespie told the Mercury his factional Right opponents were hypocrites to "whinge" about the installation of Mr Jones in Throsby after backing the "parachuting in of people like Lylea McMahon into Shellharbour" in the past.

Mr Hamilton said branch members felt Mr Gillespie was displaying a turnaround of his own.

"Andy Gillespie was very boisterous against Lylea McMahon getting parachuted in and boisterous against Sharon Bird getting Cunningham when (Greens candidate) Michael Organ got elected," Mr Hamilton said.

He said anyone who lived outside the Throsby electorate like Mr Jones would not be excluded in a pre-selection process.

With the Gilmore electorate shifting north the Albion Park-Oak Flats ALP branch will have a say in both seats in 2010.

Former Labor candidate Neil Reilly has declared his intention to stand against sitting Liberal MP Jo Gash, but Mr Hamilton said members expected a pre-selection process for Gilmore.

Goes to show what a disorganised bunch of no hopers we have running the branches. Labor in its true form is supposedly the political party for the working man and woman, to ensure social equity, decent working conditions and pay for all. The problem is that there are now so many different views and selfish attitudes the real reason for Labor has disappeared. Factional infighting has become the norm, back stabbing is almost compulsory, self interest is evident everywhere and the interest of the average punter has gone by the wayside. That is very evident in the way that the Party treats its loyal voters, they do not listen to what the people want only what State and Federal Labor hierarchy stipulates. Even the hard working Branch members who would make excellent MPs are ignored and overlooked as prospects because somebody higher up owes somebody a favour and we end up with imports. I say go Independent where you are able to have an opinion, have a say in what you believe and vote according to the merit of the motion each and every time and not rubber stamp decisions made by caucus. Have a look at our Prime Minister now compared to when he was in opposition, he has become arrogant

Another example of the Labour party taking this regions voters for granted, voting for an independent as 'johne' has suggested is not the answer as they do not have the political clout, and history shows that they do not hang around in politics for long terms. The answer is simple vote for the alternative major party and put them in to represent our electorates, this would certainly make the Labour party take notice.

What a farce - the supposed political party that stands for a "fair go", equity, democracy, working families and the ordinary punter. Total hypocrisy & double standards - a candidate will parachuted in to Throsby - it amazes me that people in this region still seem to think that what goes on here has anything to do with what they want. The Federal and State Labor hierarchies know that in the end the "donkeys" in this region will cop it sweet.

Hee Haw, the faithful will vote Labor anyway! Pity they won't dump the ALP for one election....and then see how we are treated in the Illawarra region

Um... which union is the PM a member of again? CPSU isn't it? Who's the National Secretary of the CPSU? Stephen Jones. The cooincidences are intriguing. In Jones' defense, he is hardly being 'parachuted into the electorate.' Jones knows the Illawarra very well - he grew up there, went to school and university there. His family still have a place at Minnamurra. There's no doubt in my mind Jones would represent the people of Throsby well.

um... his family still have a place at Minnamurra.. so?? My family have a villa in Italy, does that mean I can run for italian elections? I think the real issue here is that the ALP members arent having a say in who it is that they would like to represent them. fine he is a good candidate, he rode a bike across aust etc etc etc but obviously the lcoal members of the ALP would want to havea say as to who they should spend there saturdays working on a booth for. im not in the ALP nor do I vote for them but at the end of the day, isnt it meant to be democratic? what is the ALP heaad office scared of? members actually chosing their own candidate? maybe voting for someone not a stiff shirted yes man? no offence Mr Jones but you have been awfully quiet?
