Lightning sparks South Coast bushfires

20 Nov, 2009 03:57 PM
Two helicopters have been called in to battle a number of bushfires sparked by a lightning strikes on the South Coast this afternoon.

One blaze broke out in remote bushland at Cabbage Tree Gully at Kangaroo Valley just after 1.45pm today.

RFS Shoalhaven Operations Officer Paul Gooey said that fire was expected to burn up the escarpment and join up with a second fire burning in the Wingecarribee area.

"It's running up the hill and will come up on top of the escarpment," Mr Gooey said.

"It's in a remote area, at this stage we can't get in so we can't determine the exact size of it."

He said about 30 RFS Shoalhaven officers were battling the blaze.

"At this stage no properties are at risk, but people should stay alert and ... we will be advising people accordingly if things do deteriorate."

A lightning strike also caused a fire in bushland at Falls Creek, however Mr Gooey said that fire was quickly extinguished.

Quite heart warming that it wasn’t deliberately lit bushfire.
