An inquest into the death of a man hit and killed on Mt Ousley Rd has cleared police of wrongdoing.
Warrawong man Dragan Urgic, 38, died as a result of injuries sustained when struck by one or possibly several vehicles on the busy road in the early hours of February 28, 2010.
On the night of his death, Mr Urgic, his girlfriend, Catherine Watkins, and friend Nicholas Klaus were heading back to the Illawarra after a night out in Sydney marred by arguments.
While driving back, the discord reignited and an intoxicated Mr Urgic grew violent.
The trio pulled over just past Bulli Tops and Ms Watkins got out of the car and started walking, followed by an aggressive Mr Urgic.
Mr Klaus followed the pair in the hope Ms Watkins would get back in the car and that Mr Urgic would calm down.
Instead, the Warrawong man remained angry, throwing a beer bottle at the vehicle and hitting it with an empty esky he was carrying.
A number of concerned motorists, seeing the two people walking along Mt Ousley Rd late at night and fearing for their safety, called triple zero.
Police found the pair about 10pm but were only able to offer Ms Watkins a lift. Mr Urgic refused an offer to be picked up by another car.
Minutes later, Mr Klaus again attempted to offer his friend with a lift.
Instead his car was pelted with sticks and stones, so he left, driving to Wollongong police station to make a report.
Just after 11pm, Mr Urgic was hit by a car as he ran across Mt Ousley Rd, north of the Picton Rd overpass.
Witnesses said a number of other cars then drove past, possibly running over the man.
Paramedics transported Mr Urgic to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Magistrate Scott Mitchell found Mr Urgic had died of multiple injuries sustained when accidentally struck by a car, or more than one car, travelling south on Mt Ousley Rd.
