McCarthy packs in trust job

17 Apr, 2008 03:00 AM
Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy has resigned from the Killalea State Park Trust, her reasons including disappointment with NSW Lands Minister Tony Kelly.

Councillor McCarthy said after seven months Mr Kelly still had not responded to her letter calling for an investigation into the leasing arrangement of a section of the park.

She stressed, however, this reason was secondary to the additional workload she had acquired since replacing Alex Darling as chair of the Southern Councils Group last month.

Kiama council is now officially unrepresented on the trust after fellow councillors declined to take up the position when it was announced as vacant on Tuesday night.

The position will remain open and councillors elected in September will have the opportunity of nominating.

Cr McCarthy said her letter to Mr Kelly expressed concern about the Department of Lands' intention to lease public land to a private developer for 50 years, the failure to notify the trust of its intention, and the failure to advertise the lease for tender.

"I am concerned there has still not been the courtesy of a response from the minister," she said.

Cr McCarthy said the council would not be uninformed about matters involving the trust since she had successfully voted to have the body submit public information documents to both Kiama and Shellharbour councils.

"I had a minority view on the trust ... (but) I will be following the progress of this development and will continue to oppose leasing of public land to a private developer," she said.

"I will be writing a letter to the minister today saying it's been seven months and what is the position."

See ya later! Get someone else on the job who'll get things going. Get those buildings started - this area needs jobs, and it needs construction. Dont worry about trying to protect a bit of lantana.

No wonder Ms McCarthy resigned from the Killalea Trust! This is the organisation apparently run in such a covert manner that its members cannot even report back on the trust's doings to their own councils or organisations.

It's the same one that went along with the NSW Government's lease of part of the state park to a developer.
