IT has been three years since police dog Carts was fatally stabbed in the line of duty at Corrimal but his memory is destined to live on.
A public memorial dedicated to corrective service and police dogs who died protecting the people they served is in the planning stages at Tahmoor, the birthplace of Carts and his brother Titan, who was also killed on the job.
The life-size bronze German shepherd sculpture will take pride of place in Emmett Park, a site both dogs frolicked in as puppies in training.
Tahmoor Chamber of Commerce president Di Lange said the memorial had been a labour of love for Carts' breeder, who was still coming to terms with her former pet's violent and untimely death.
She said the memorial would provide the people of NSW with a tranquil setting in which to pay their respects to all police dogs killed while serving the community.
"This will be a place for the public to come and mourn the loss of these brave dogs," she said.
"It is the first of its kind in NSW outside the police academy at Goulburn, which is not really open to the public."
Ms Lange said Wollondilly Shire Council had approved the memorial and the search for a talented artist to sculpt the reclining shepherd is in progress.
Work is expected to begin by the end of this year.
Carts was killed in December 2007 after an offender attempting to flee the scene of a break and enter at the Corrimal Surf Life Saving Club stabbed the police dog.
Carts' older brother, Titan also died from stab wounds while pursuing a man armed with two knives at Lalor Park in Sydney's west in 2004.
The Tahmoor Chamber of Commerce aims to raise $20,000 to construct the memorial.
