Miracle Fairy Meadow drunk driver didn't kill anyone: police

03 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
It was a miracle no-one was killed by a speeding, drunk driver in Fairy Meadow on Wednesday night, Wollongong Bail Court was told yesterday.

Gene Scott Wilson Myers, 24, had been on a drinking "bender" for days when he drove at twice the speed limit on Towradgi Rd about midnight, police said.

"Due to his level of intoxication it was a miracle he did not kill himself or any other road user," police facts tendered in court said.

"(It was) pure luck there were no other road users on the road."

Police allegedly detected Myers' car at 118km/h in a 90km/h speed zone on the Northern Distributor.

They followed him into Towradgi Rd, where Myers was said to have sped away. Police initiated a pursuit and alleged Myers reached 120km/h in a 60km/h zone before hitting a traffic light pole while turning into Pioneer Dr.

Myers later returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.195 - almost four times the limit, police said.

He was charged with high-range drink-driving, reckless driving, negligent driving, driving whilst disqualified and driving more than 40km/h over the speed limit.

The court was told Myers had never held a driving licence and had lived in his car for two days.

During the court appearance, defence barrister Jane Healey said Myers required medical attention. "I note that he's still very highly intoxicated now and he's dehydrated," Ms Healey said.

Myers did not apply for bail and was referred to Shellharbour Hospital for assessment.
