More to Miss World than meets the eye

02 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
There was plenty of flesh on show at the Miss World Australia Illawarra contest yesterday - but rest assured, this was beauty with a purpose.

A final field of seven primped and preened young women donned bikinis and strutted their stuff before a panel of judges in a bid to proceed to the state finals.

They competed over two days in the categories of healthy body image, fitness, talent, public speaking, poise and charity work.

Ashleigh Potter, 19, of Wonoona, was named the overall winner at a gala dinner last night at Wollongong's Lagoon Restaurant.

Close behind was T J Binney, 19, of Albion Park in second place and Jemma Carson, 25, of Kiama in third place.

Chair of Miss World Australia, Pauline McFetridge, praised Ms Potter for her excellent public speaking skills and fit physique.

"She was good in every category. She spoke well, she was a very fit girl and over the past few days she emerged like a butterfly," Ms McFetridge said.

"Everybody was very taken with her."

Far from just being a beauty competition, the Miss World contest stood for "beauty with a purpose", Ms McFetridge said.

"As one girl in a competition said recently, these girls are not models, they're role models," she said.

"They also have to carry out volunteer or charity work as part of the competition - one girl here raised $9500 for the Variety Club."

Rather than searching for the perfect figure, the swimwear category focused on muscle tone, symmetry of form and posture.

"We're looking for a healthy young Australian girl," she said.

Dress it up all you like but it still looks like sexist crap to me. Would they ever have the equivalent for young illawarra males in speedos ? Ugh....

Put your clothes back on ladies and flaunt your brains instead. You're setting the women's movement back 100 years!...

Ease up greta and diva. Stop taking everything so seriously. Do males cry 'sexism' when Cleo produces their 'Bachelor of the year' awards or when the annual footy player calenders are released?. If a woman has a great body, it is her perogative to flaunt it - without having to answer to every feminist in the world.

Agree with John here...if you had the body to flaunt, you would do it too! I looked like that once...*sigh* Go ladies!

yup, totally agree johnp. Bet the women don't mind it when the fireies get their gear off for the calender, but the thugby heads are all brawn, no brains.

Greta, Diva, do you find it ironic that women wear attractive clothes, get hair styled, put on makeup and then also can be proud of there appearance in a bikini? I think the emancipation of women includes the power for them to get out there and be proud of their beauty. I'd hate for them to take the Taliban route. It has nothing to do with sexism. Have a look at young women AND men today. I don't see any unbalanced approach to their image and appearance.

Just hate the day when all women will have to completely cover their whole body, but with help of friendly feminists it might happen sooner than I think.

Go girls, sound like some people are jealous or has beens.Maybe not have the figure anymore.

As long as they're not the type who look on other women of all ages and judge them as "un-healthy" just because they don't have the same figure. I'm not a size 8 and I probably would not even be considered for this kind of competition (I'm a size 10/12), but I'm very involved in athletics and sports- keeping myself fit, and I eat well and strive for balance to stay healthy. I'd like to think that these 'beautiful role models' are also genuinely very nice people, and understand that they are a version of visual 'beautiful', and that it is the whole picture (morals, how they percieve the world, how they speak, posture, etc) that is defining them as Miss World contestants. I know many girls and young women who have the Miss World physique and are too quick to judge beauty by appearance. They openly diss others who don't fit this frame of "beauty", and honestly it makes even me uncomfortable! I'm not jealous of their bodies, but I'd love to feel that my body, as it is in this moment of being healthy, is also accepted in society as being beautiful to at least some degree! (:
