Nathan Rees to make WIN Stadium announcement

16 Oct, 2009 12:58 PM
NSW Premier Nathan Rees will visit the Illawarra this morning to make an announcement about WIN Stadium.

The Premier will be joined by St George Illawarra Dragons coach Wayne Bennett when he makes the announcement at the stadium at 11am.

  • UPDATE: WIN Stadium to get $28.9m western grandstand

No further details have been provided, however the announcement is likely to centre around redesigned plans for a new western grandstand.

Last month the Mercury revealed plans for the grandstand at WIN Stadium were on the verge of being approved by the NSW Cabinet.

  • New WIN grandstand to get green light

Costing between $25-$30 million, the new grandstand option had been favourably received by the Government after a Treasury review rejected a grander $47 million plan which included a hotel and walkway to the Steelers Club, earlier this year.

Also joining Mr Rees today will be Sport and Recreation minister Kevin Greene, Minister for the Illawarra David Campbell and Wollongong MP Noreen Hay.

    More details after 11am.

No No NO nO NO.....Mr Rees, how about giving us a democratically elected council administration first?? Your running of this state is incomprehensible...I love my footy but new stadiums when we don't even have proper public transport services...what a joke.

yes yes yes, wollongong needs this. As a major city we look like a third world country as far a facillities for sport, its about time, now all we have to do is get it hired out at a descent price so it gets used more than 6 or 7 times a year

I hope Campbell has told Rees not to spend too much on the stadium's eastern hill as it will inevitably be washed away in the next coastal storm as the hill is already known to be within the storm hazard zone....sea level rise aside. I also hope there is some strategic value in any funding announcement or some other new purpose for the facility other than for 5 or 6 games by a dying rugby code - even Murdoch is looking to pull his money out of rugby league. If Rees was well informed he'd also throw money towards a strategic rethink of longer term regional sports infrastructure in the Illawarra. Don't get me wrong, there are many benefits of WIN Stadium's location but a major coastal storm is a matter of when, not if.

Stick the stadium where the sun don't shine and fix our hospitals first, are these jokers for real???

What a waste. The stadium is in the wrong place. Lets hope they don't waste too much money on it. Convert this valuable coastal land to something that gets more than a few of dozen hours use a year, and something that actually creates job opportunities and makes our city a destination.

And fortunately for the Illawarra and the Australian World Cup bid, the location of this stadium makes in unable to be expanded to a 42000 capacity even with temporary seating. Here's an idea, why not concede defeat on WIN stadium, move to a site next to public transport, build a facility with 12000 seats and two hills with that 60 Million, and when Australia is announced as a World Cup host, make a permanent capacity of 28000 all seater with 15000 temporary seats for the World Cup (the FFA's stadium template for Canberra and Adelaide). This redevelopment is incredibly short sighted and is benefiting nobody in the longer term.

Forget stadium, make parking so people don't sneak in and leave cars on private properties without owner's permission.

NSW is in a terrible financial state. Spending taxpayers' money on another white elephant is ridiculous. And Nathan's timing is impeccable after today's costing of the Sydney Metro project!

Wat so weve got enough money to do up a sporting arena, but still not enough to build a road to Horsley, your a joke Rees, you are certainly showing where you priorities lay
