Nathan Rees to unveil $28m WIN grandstand plan

16 Oct, 2009 12:58 PM
NSW Premier Nathan Rees will announce $28 million for the redevelopment of WIN Stadium's western grandstand this morning, the Mercury can reveal.

The Premier will be joined by St George Illawarra Dragons coach Wayne Bennett when he makes the announcement in Wollongong at 11am today.

  • UPDATE: WIN Stadium to get $28.9m western grandstand

The new grandstand option has been favourably received by the Government after a Treasury review rejected a grander $47 million plan, which included a hotel and walkway to the Steelers Club, earlier this year.

Today's announcement means it is likely the grandstand will be completed in less than two years and an official opening within the context of a March 2011 election campaign.

The funding announcement follows a long community fight for the replacement of the dilapidated grandstand, a campaign that was taken up by Minister for the Illawarra David Campbell and Wollongong MP Noreen Hay.

Plans are believed to include grandstand seating for 6000 people and new corporate facilities, which will be offered for hire outside the rugby league season.

Last month, Wollongong Sportsground Trust chairman Chris Christodoulou said the Government needed to move quickly on making a decision so the trust could meet "a whole lot of deadlines".

"The trust would ideally like to see a decision on this before Christmas in order to allow the go-ahead of the seven NRL games of the 2010 season as part of the agreement with the St George Illawarra Dragons," Mr Christodoulou said.

"We have been in consultation with the Dragons, but if a decision to go ahead is made after Christmas the trust can't plan with any certainty."

Wat so weve got enough money to do up a sporting arena, but still not enough to build a road to Horsley, your a joke Rees, you are certainly showing where you priorities lay.

Ahh the election campaign... I would have thought that 20,000 voters in Horsley would be more impressed with 20 odd year old bridge proposal being built!

New road in Horsley should be coming before a re vamped stadium. Not good enough

Is this really a wise investment at the moment? The NRL has been making noises about taking games away from Wollongong for the past couple of years and Wollongong doesn't come out on mass to support its sporting teams anyway. Why don't they extend the F6 under Sutherland and up to St Peters like they planned so many years ago? That would be money better spent.

And not a single mention of car parking. What a joke!

$28m for the bum comfort of those watching 5 or 6 games of a dying sport called rugby league rather than upgrade the F6, Bulli Hospital or provide Horsley with a decent road link. What a principled lot Rees and Campbell really are. The comfy seats wont be much use when the next major coastal storm scours away the easern part of the stadium either.

Labour voters again take note... this is another example of how your government has lost touch with its electorate, firstly $28Mil is not enough to bring WIN stadium up to a first class facility and secondly yes I agree with others on this blog, spend this money on something that is really needed such as the Horsley by-pass. It makes you think as to why Leylea Mc mooved her office out of Dapto!

Sell the current site, don't spend more money on the place! Move to a new location, closer to rail, highway, with parking etc. The current site is not suitable for a FIFA compliant World Cup stadium, meaning this announcement has locked out the Illawarra from a possible World Cup in Australia in 2018 / 2022. The benefits to the region could have been monumental - we'd have been one of 12 cities broadcast for the whole world to see. Short sited government and MPs only interested in the next election. Our region will never be as good as it should be.

$28m in two years is not going to fix anything that matters in the Illawarra, Bypass roads, Hospitals, Football stadiums or the local Kebab stand. What we need is a Gov that knows what its people need, not a promise from the creature from the street. . .
