Nervous idol rocks the Gong

Hundreds of youngsters last night got a taste of the excitement and talent that will be on show in July at World Youth Day in Sydney.

More than 4000 teenagers flocked to WIN Entertainment Centre for the Light of the Cross Festival featuring ARIA Award winner Damien Leith, Australian Idol finalist Joseph Gatehau, The Saint Julien Spur and the World Youth Day choir and band.

Leith admitted before he went on stage last night that large crowds were still a new thing for him and he was hoping a hectic touring schedule ahead of the release of his new album, Catch the Wind, would prepare him for the 500,000-strong crowd expected at the World Youth Day Sydney celebrations in July.

"I love Wollongong audiences, but I am a little nervous," he said, adding the festival and music were positive and empowering experiences for young people.
