New, improved bus network for Wollongong

New, improved bus network for Wollongong

20 Oct, 2009 08:49 AM
Bus users are being encouraged to provide feedback on a proposed new bus network for the region, which includes a change in the frequency and routes of some services.

Premier Illawarra, Greens Northern and Dions services would be affected.

The plan includes more regular services in Unanderra, Figtree, West Wollongong, Warilla, Windang, Warrawong and Wollongong.

Routes have also been simplified, especially around Shellharbour, Albion Park, Keiraville, Gwynneville, Bellambi and Corrimal.

The review is a condition of contracts agreed to between metropolitan and outer metropolitan bus operators and the NSW Government and has occurred across the state.

Dions manager Les Dion said new contracts provided more flexibility for operators to run services in each other's territories than in the past. He said operators had worked together and with the Government on the new plans, which had led to "greater efficiency using existing resources".

"Where we have had services going around like spaghetti, we are trying to eliminate that," Mr Dion said.

Transport Minister David Campbell said the proposed new network had been formed following consultation with community representatives, and now broader feedback was being sought.

"We're seeking comments from bus users and the local community in general, to see if the proposed network meets their needs," he said.

Passengers can get flyers with the changes from Premier Illawarra, Dions Bus Service or Greens Northern Coaches and from libraries, council offices, shopping centres or state MPs' offices.

Online surveys can be filled out at www.nswbusnetwork.com.au. Or call 1800 005 113. Submissions close on November 16.

It would be great if there were better services in Figtree Heights- at the moment it would take a few hours and 2 busses to use the service to the uni and is faster to walk.

Why are they proposing to remove the bus stops from outside Westfield Warrawong on Cowper st to the much busier and congested King st bus stops?

It sounds great, but I hope there will be more buses running for the disabled, I always gets stranded for hours because there aren't enough buses for wheel chairs.
