New South Coast train timetable announced

07 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
A new train timetable to begin on October 11 will have no major impact on South Coast services, according to CityRail.

All services on the present timetable would remain, though some trains would arrive slightly earlier or later at some stations.

The new timetable was aimed at addressing crowded peak-hour trains in Sydney, by providing extra peak-hour services and carriages, and incorporated the new Epping to Chatswood rail link.

CityRail said it would introduce a new timetable for the Eastern Suburbs, Illawarra and South Coast lines after completion of the Cronulla Line duplication - which is not due until 2010.

"As part of ... this timetable new services will be introduced and stopping patterns will be reviewed," CityRail said.

Customers will have a chance to comment when the timetable becomes available.

No major impact but "some trains would arrive slightly earlier or later at some stations". I can't believe they have once again increased travelling times. As it is, since the last changes that decreased services and increased travelling times, most trains have to pause at stations for minutes in order to avoid running ahead of schedule (the exceptions being those that still manage to arrive late for reasons I guess we will never know). I guesss the RTA will be rubbing its hands with glee as more people have to drive, thus leading the "experts" declaring we need more roads to solvce our problems,

This is a disgrace that we have such a degraded timetable - worse than the 1930s - now the curfew on coal trucks is lifted we would expect more people to use rail.

And the projected figure for road coal haulage will increase from the present 5 mtpa to 10 mtpa.

This is only happening in the Illawarra where our roads will become much more unsafe. In Qld and Newcastle all coal is hauled by rail. Gosford has a much better rail service than the Illawarra

Extending time between stations is easy way out of running late. Until we get new rail line that will be able to support quick rail down and up the escarpment all we can get are rearranged chairs on our local "Titanic" issue. This is what happens with too short blanket and Government with 3 or 4 years vision to next election. For residents, best way to fix the problem is to move somewhere else, unfortunately.
