Noreen Hay defends herself amid 'dirty politics'

12 Sep, 2008 05:00 AM
Wollongong MP Noreen Hay believes she's been the victim of "dirty politics", and spent yesterday denying lurid accusations she was sexually accosted by her parliamentary colleague Kiama MP Matt Brown.

Mr Brown was accused of cavorting with Ms Hay in a sexually suggestive manner in the post-budget party in June.

He was also accused of making lewd comments to Ms Hay's daughter Alison at the party.

"Someone is obviously disgruntled ... because they are talking about a gathering that took place three months ago," Ms Hay responded on ABC radio.

"There were a number of young women in that room ... it's ridiculous ... I had a dance with Matt Brown, that's true, you know, and there was laughter going on and jokes happening."

After Mr Brown was denounced by Premier Nathan Rees later in the day, she added:

"I was not in Matt's presence for all the evening and as such cannot comment on his behaviour during times when he was not in my presence."

Ms Hay said she supported "without qualification" Mr Rees' decision to sack Mr Brown, who "failed to provide a full account of his actions to the Premier when first asked."

Suggestions that a "noticeable bump" on Ms Hay's forehead was caused by Mr Brown went unanswered, with Ms Hay failing to return the Mercury's calls.

Mr Rees said in Sydney that he would inquire as to the nature of the mysterious bump.

"I didn't notice anything. I'll have a discussion with Noreen later today," he said yesterday.

The accusations come at a precarious time for Ms Hay, whose previous position as Parliamentary Secretary for Health still hangs in the balance following former premier Morris Iemma's resignation.

Mr Rees said he had made no decision about Ms Hay's future but would be talking to her by the end of the week.

You have to believe her, she's a politician, an elected representative of the people who rightly holds herself to a higher standard of behaviour.

Secondly Brown should be able to rely on a version of Catch 22.

There's clearly a minimum amount of alcohol needed to induce a man to do what he supposedly did, and it is extremely unlikely that he could have drank that much & remained conscious.

If one votes for them again after this sordid episode , one should should have their head examined.

This local member of our community always appears to be defending herself, particularly when it comes to professional conduct expected of a MP.

Defending donations to her campaign, defending her association with corrupt developers and now defending her alleged involvement with the no-pants man from the south.

These people are supposed to be mature adults elected to represent the community in the NSW Parliament.

In the excitement and confusion of the post-budget party did any of the witnessess have the presence of mind to note the brand of the underpants? Were they clean and well fitting?

What was the temperature in the room?

All these facts will be important evidence in the event the matter goes further.

As for the rest of the story ... I simply can't envisage that happening - whatever the temperature in the room!

Do any of these people know what the word truth means? Doesn't look like it. Saw nothing heard nothing. Standards!! Neither Hay nor Brown can spell the word much less know what it means.

Good riddance to both of them. Stop serving alcohol at these events and that will put an end to all this misbehaviour.
