 One man's battle in Afghanistan

One man's battle in Afghanistan

03 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
Morale remains high for Koonawarra soldier Private Daniel Ball despite extreme danger and loss and maiming of mates in Afghanistan.

The 25-year-old said it was the difference Australian troops were making in the war that kept his and his comrades' spirits buoyed.

"We are making a massive difference. You can see how it has changed from the time we arrived to now," he said. "I guess that keeps all the boys acting so positively."

With the loss of 21 Australians in the campaign, and almost 1800 soldiers in total when taking into account the western coalition force of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands, reasons for cheer are short on the ground.

But celebrations were in order when Pte Ball travelled to Paris on leave in June and proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Julie Wooler.

The Brisbane-based legal secretary said that despite the romantic destination and urging from her friends that a proposal might be at hand, she was completely surprised when he presented her with an engagement ring.

"Dan convinced me he wasn't going to do it during his Afghanistan trip, so I believed it wasn't going to happen," she said.

As a returned soldier, (and sailor) the feeling, as it has been down through history, is that they are there because this is what they have trained to do. Ask any of them as they are embarking "do you want to stay home?" and you know what the answer will be. Their deaths are tragic and regrettable, but they are all proud Australians serving their country. However one of our saddest killing fields is the Picton Road what is the score there?

When people argue over our role in Afghanistan or Iraq and demand our troops come home, I have to remind them that 88 innocent Australians died in the terrorist attack in Bali and that 3,000 innocent people, including Australians, died in the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. (Some poeople have short memories) I am proud our boys are overe there rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan and ridding both countries of terrorist scum so the locals can live in some peace and security.

Soldiers, as they have always done, go where they are told, the best we can do is support them while they are there, and even more so, when they have returned.
