Owls of protest as wall art goes

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Owners of trendy Wollongong bar Yours and Owls have painted over a controversial artwork on the side of their Kembla St building, avoiding a hefty $1100 bill from the landlord.

The graffiti-style mural was painted on the grey wall in November last year without consent from the site’s owners, Sargents Charitable Foundation, the altruistic arm of Sargents Pies.

Bar owners Ben Tillman, Adam Smith and Balunn Jones have repeatedly asked their landlord for permission to replace the mural with three interchangeable panels, however they said they had not received a response to the requests, and had only been told to return the wall to its original colour.

The situation came to a head last week when Mr Tillman and Mr Jones were told to repaint it themselves or cop a $1100 bill for a contractor to do it instead.

Unsurprisingly, they chose the former.

They spent just $50 on paint and brushes and completed the job in a matter of hours.

Mr Tillman yesterday said he was disappointed to have to paint over the mural, but said he would continue to fight to get local artwork in the CBD.

‘‘It’s drawn attention to how boring the CBD is without it,’’ he said.

‘‘We actually thought with all the support [for the mural], it may have swayed the decision of the owner, but obviously not.’’

The mural attracted more than 2700 Facebook ‘‘likes’’ on a proposal to make the wall a public exhibition space.

Bland gray - yep thats the look Wollongong deserves. Here's an idea for council, lets paint everything beige. That will inspire our moribund populus.

I wonder how many will blame the Council for this when it actually has nothing to do with them.

what a joke ,where's the council when you really need them, as everyone in wollongong knows they are conspicuous by their absence avoiding responsability,it was well painted ,actractive and not put there illegally in the dead of night, but this is wollongong.! shame guys that looked really good, dont give up ,!

Such a shame. Such bright young men who created a vibrant cafe that has become a favourite place for all ages to enjoy being there. Wollongong has scruffy enough and their enhancement was in keeping with the area - its in the 'art precinct' for goodness sake. Keep trying guys as its another blank canvas for art in the gong.

Great result!! Good on the landlord for sticking to their guns, their property had been de-faced (vandalised) by the tenants. They wouldn't paint this sort crap on the inside wall so why should we have to look at on the outside wall.

The art-work looked wicked and kudos to the lads for trying it - but their clear lack of respect for legislation and the landlord is unfortunetly a sign of their ignorance...

attempting a facebook onslaught to sway what is essentially the law... what country do these guys think they live in?

Publicly bagging the council on their facebook for not "stepping in"... Council stepping in would set an interesting precident for the city...

Wake up lads! we live in Australia! we have rules! we all have to follow them!

Go through the right channels, if you dont succeed change location!

question: how can landlords dictate the decor of a place? is this in standard rental agreement, esp for business. I know of several places who have repeated interior and experior - often boldly. only deal is they have to be back to agreed colour at end of lease. i mean, this art is a form of publicity for the business. it is not obscene. the guys might have done something less graffiti like at first - they sorta stubbed the art in public eye - its not my favorite kind of mural. but legally, why does it have to be removed at all?

This 'mural' seems to a bit neater than most, but it's still graffiti.

Our cities and towns have been turned into god awful messes by kids and some adults who have this idea that scrawling mindless crap over every public space is a form of expression. It isn't, it's just another form of vandalism. Destruction of public property. There's no entitlement. And it ain't art either. Even the better executed stuff is at best basic comic book style that any junior student learns in the first days of a signwriting or art course. Get a life people.

Perhaps the landlords could conduct a competition for the most boring wall colour.I think "dull grey" is a fine choice for it's depressive quality , however my vote would be for "rust brown" which is even more boring and would capture the industrial decay of our fair city.

next time ask before you deface someone else's property.

then u wont have to pay for the cleanup or just maybe u might get permission to change things.

it's called 'good manners'.
