Oz Day 2010: family friendly or boozy yob-fest?

27 Jan, 2010 03:00 AM
Compared to last year's alcohol-fuelled yob-fest, Wollongong's 2010 Australia Day celebration was a family picnic, police said.

By 4pm, just 12 arrests had been made around the harbour foreshore, largely for public order issues such as offensive language and resisting police.

Inspector Steve Hegarty said despite the alcohol-free zones being well promoted, a considerable amount of alcohol was still confiscated, but taken early to minimise the damage.

"One of our biggest strategies was early intervention on alcohol," Insp Hegarty said.

"We've had a fair amount of intervention with taking alcohol off people. At this stage that early intervention has been working.

"The crowd seems to be more family orientated than last year. The majority have been well behaved."

With last year's event descending into chaos, largely because of visitors to the region, police were monitoring train arrivals yesterday.

Rumours of armed revellers on a train bound for Wollongong left authorities on high alert.

Police received information about 20 people who were on board a southbound train which pulled in to North Wollongong around 4.20pm.

The revellers were believed to be carrying weapons and heading for Wollongong's Belmore Basin.

More than 30 police lined the platform to meet the train, searching passengers and checking identification, but no weapons were found.

  • Police were also called to another incident 30 minutes later on Crown St after a violent brawl involving four men. One was taken to Wollongong Hospital suffering head wounds.

Insp Hegarty said this year's police response, involving the Operational Support Group, general duties, highway patrol, trail bikes, licensing police, mounted police and the dog squad, was 12 months in the planning with Wollongong City Council.

"We won't breathe easy until after 9pm fireworks and the mass exodus of people has moved through Wollongong, but by comparison to last year, this has been great."

The Lake Illawarra command also reported more family friendly festivities this year.

I went expecting a yob fest but was pleasantly surprised at the easy going, happy and festive mood of most people. Of course there were the odd yobs draped in flags but mostly it was a family fun day out!... I'm glad I went!

Although we are happy to share our lovely beaches and towns with the greater public (Mostly from Sydney I assume) what a shame it was to see Thirroul Austinmer and Coledale transformed into chaotic carparks where people didnt seem to care less who they inconvenienced to get a spot closest to the beach or park. Where was the Council? They could have made a mint in fines. No Stopping Zones were ignored all over the place including along Lawrence Hargraves Drive in some very dangerous spots that could have resulted in serious accidents. really disappointed in the Council, even if issuing fines for illegal and dangerous parking may seem "unAustralian" on Australia Day...

A big thanks to WCC and especially Integral Energy for that amazing fireworks display...Police should have checked the covered seating area near the kids playground coz it was full to the brim of underage drinkers and it stunk like urine behind the concrete wall, when we were leaving...the toilet is less than 20mtrs away.

It is great to see that our beautiful beaches and their surroundings are attracting visitors from outside of the local area for Australia Day, however if the disgusting mess seen this morning is any indication, our beaches won't be worth visiting in the future. Food scraps, plastic bags, drink bottles, lost clothing and footwear, beer bottles & even several soiled nappies were the sights greeting early morning walkers at Bulli and Sandon Point. Mounds of garbage were also deposited beside the too few garbage bins supplied by Council. If this is the cost of increased tourism, who needs it?

Although I respect the police, and i'm sure they did an excellant job, I find it incredibly over the top that I had my bottled unopened beer in a bag removed and poured out for walking near an alcohol-free zone as I was walking to a friends party. Safety is one thing, complete police control is something else.
