 Parking fees slashed

Parking fees slashed

22 Jul, 2010 11:11 AM
Wollongong City Council has caved in to public pressure over its unpopular parking meter regime, agreeing to cut parking costs while a review is carried out.

In an open letter to the community, sent to the Mercury this morning, the council’s general manager David Farmer announced half-hour zones would drop to 50c and one-hour parking would cost $1 until the review is complete.

The flat $2 fee will remain on two-hour and three-hour zones.

Stickers will be placed on meters to alert motorists to the revised fees. The changes are expected to take effect by this afternoon.

Changes arising from the parking review are likely to be implemented by September.

The backflip comes after a hostile public meeting attended by Mr Farmer last week, where retailers and shoppers expressed their anger over the controversial parking meters.

CBD businesses have reported a sharp downturn in trade since parking meters were introduced in March.

"I heard your concerns and I agree we need to get the model for paid parking right," Mr Farmer wrote, saying the interim price cut was "an act of good faith".

Mr Farmer said the use of metered spaces was growing, but conceded the system needed to be improved.

A standard $2 fee will still apply to credit card payments.

This still wont get me back to shop in willongong I'll only come back when the metres are removed.I'm happy supporting buisness in other suburbs.

That is a start. Now for the balance which is to remove them altogether. Mr Farmer says he needs to "get the model for paid parking right". The answer is simple, no paid street parking!

Genius time in Wollongong Council! It only took 4 months to realize they'd almost killed off the CBD. Instead of going broke quickly, now shops and businesses can die slowly. The CBD will only get back to normal when the meters are gone! "Dead, buried and cremated!" as one political hopeful said recently. GIVE US BACK OUR FREE PARKING!!

A dozen dissenters can kill off a major development yet 7,000 dissenters can't remove parking meters? You are a public servant, not a dictator... what don't you understand Mr Farmer? Remove the parking meters—Wollongong neither wants them or needs them.

Mr Farmer your planning and diplomatic skills are ordinary to say the least. Mate, the meters have to go. Simple.

Years of incompetence by Oxley has left WCC in a fairly precarious financial position. There is a need to increase income to pay for repairs, capital works and wages; this is one way of doing it. If you, Donald, or anyone else can come up with a fair & equitable way to raise several hundreds of thousands of dollars a year then speak up! I guess that paid parking has increased my outgoings by $10 a month (max), just how many times do (did) some of you park in the CBD? I bet most of the complainers would waste way more than $10 a month on junk food, booze, cigarettes, pokies or some other "optional" spending.

I could never get a park on the street before parking meters were installed and now I actually can. I don't agree no one is coming to Wollongong. I am and my friends are too. I think Council is showing they are actually listening. Let's see what comes out of the review and just stop being so negative for once. You're all doing a great job promoting our city.

Wollongong is just like Newcastle, a ghost town since parking meters were installed.

I ventured into The Gong, and a piece of steel sticking out of the ground asked me to place a $2 coin in its hungry mouth. This was for a 5 minute or less stop, just to buy a computer part, worth not much more than the price of parking. So I went one suburb away, and got what I wanted. Should I pay 50 cents now? What I would call an “incompetence tax”, or mismanagement recovery. It is true that it probably cost me about 50 cents in petrol to go to another suburb, but at least I didn’t have to deal with a steel structure insultingly gobbling up my spare change. Yeah, we know, “Sydney’s got ‘em”, but it also has 4.5 million people, and we know that a sucker is born every minute. The Gong is still languishing with about 284,000. So the “sucker-ratio” is likely to be less.
