Parking meters rolled out from March

28 Oct, 2009 08:57 AM
Parking meters are expected to sprout from Wollongong CBD footpaths as early as March, after Wollongong City Council administrators last night accepted a tender to install 141 parking ticket machines.

The machines will service 850 of the 1440 parking spaces in the city centre.

Reino International was selected from six companies vying for the contract, and will be responsible for supplying and installing the machines and maintaining them for two years.

Administrator Col Gellatly said the meters were part of the broader Inner City Parking Strategy which includes a number of measures to increase parking turnover and promote the use of public transport, cycling and walking in the heart of Wollongong.

Dr Gellatly said $2.4 million had been allocated to the project.

Paid parking will apply during business hours and Saturday mornings and allow for a resident parking scheme.

"It will be a flat $2 fee, but times for parking will vary in various spots," Dr Gellatly said.

Just remember, once we've got them, no council in this state will let go of such a lucrative form of blatant taxation. The Administrators have got it all wrong and there is nothing the people of Wollongong can do about it. Dictatorship , not democracy!

This will destroy the present spirit of visiting downtown Wollongong (where i can always find a park when i need one, even if it means a short walk). We can expect the price of parking to steadily increase once the parking meters have been bedded down. This was not a decision which should have been made by three unelected bureaucrats who do not represent Wollongong, and who have a 'vision' which belongs somewhere else.

At least Sydney visitors will feel more at home....Who knows prehaps one day we will have pay to swim at our fine beaches. I think there ugly and greedy. So long to our City free looking Wollongong...

Lets be patient for a few more years till the next stage of Stockland Shellharbour is complete and everyone who lives south of Crown Street will go there anyway. I abandoned Wollongong CBD years ago. Follow me, you'll love it.

People should see what has happened to Newcastle after installing parking meters in that town. It is now a ghost town! No-one goes to the center of town (Hunter St) anymore. It has solved one problem, there is now plenty of parking available, but at a cost. It has cost also cost plenty of buisnesses alot of trade and money. It is one of the worst descisions by that council, and will prove to be one of the worst descisions by our administrators, just wait and see!

I thought the people of Wollongong had spoken on this issue. Wasn't it about a 87% NO TO PARKING METERS????..... And yet, here we are! Where is the democracy here? Talk about a police state!

If workers taking up parking spots is councils main concern, why do they have council spots "reserved" in tyhe Pioner Hall car park that are never in full use. What a fiasco. A ridiculous decision promoted by revenue seeking council management to the detriment of CBD employees and shoppers, rubber stamped by 3 state government (and what a record of success they have)appointed administrators who could not find the Wollongong CBD with a nav man.

I've never used a parking meter in my life.... I have always paied for parking at Crown Central anyway so it doesn't bother me really. Perhaps catching public transport is a good way to get out of paid parking.

... Count your comments are exactly right...and I believe now Newcastle council are actually considering getting rid of some of their meters too.. realised their mistake and are now trying to get people back onto the CBD... the other thing that they have is a "free bus " kinda like the one we have now but it covers are greater area than the Wollongong version...maybe thats an option- OH NO that would mean something free now wouldn't it!!!! not gonna happen !!!

I would like to know what this means for those of us who ride motorcycles. Do we have to pay to park and then have a car driver come along and steal the ticket from our bikes? or will we continue to have our designated parking spaces that car drivers park over the top of anyway?
