 Peek inside $3mil Balgownie mansion

Peek inside $3mil Balgownie mansion

04 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
In the 1990s, when Wollongong's wealthiest preferred panoramic ocean views over close proximity to the water, the title of the region's premier street belonged to Wellington Dr, Balgownie.

Today, 64 Wellington Dr, one of the finest homes in the region, will be open for public inspection for the first time.

Owned by the Issa family, the property is for sale with offers about $3 million sought.

The six-bedroom mansion located on 2.5ha of manicured gardens was built in the early '90s and extensively renovated 10 years ago.

The home boasts antique chandeliers, 300-year-old French doors, a timber and granite kitchen and a private car park.

Then there are the views.

About 10 years ago, Wollongong's elite developed a preference for a Cliff Rd penthouse over a mountainside mansion, but Simon Kersten of Colliers International said Wellington Dr remains an iconic location.

"We wouldn't normally open up a property of this calibre, but it has to be seen to be believed," he said.

Mr Kersten - dubbed "Wollongong's real estate agent to the stars" after selling Paul Hogan's Byron Bay property for $8.1 million in 2006 - argues the $3 million price tag for the Balgownie property represents excellent value.

"You couldn't build it for that much ... the house itself is more than 750sqm and with the landscaping the replacement value is millions more," Mr Kersten said.

According to Australian Property Monitors, No 64 Wellington Dr last sold in 2006.

It was listed with $3.3 million expectations in November 2006 and was snapped up the following month for $2.7 million.

The property can be viewed today between 2pm and 3.30pm and next Saturday at the same time.

Nice shack but the upkeep would be horrendous. Buy this one with cash, don't have a mortgage.

How many bedrooms? Sounds ideal as a shelter for homeless people.

Nice house but way too much money spent on it. Strip it back a little and would make a great nursing home.
