 Petition opposes Coniston road closure

Petition opposes Coniston road closure

30/09/2008 5:00:00 AM
Management at the Coniston office of international IT firm Computer Sciences Corporationhave presented the Roads and Traffic Authority with a petition of more than 300 signatures opposing the proposed median closure of Drummond St, Mount St Thomas.

CSC spokesman Trevor Hardy said the introduction of a 24-hour, no-right-turn rule at the intersection of Drummond St and Masters Rd, would have an "extreme effect" on the company and its 380 employees.

"We have about 1000 vehicle movements a day going in and out, and if it is closed we will have to go via Figtree shops or do a big wrap-around on Five Islands Rd," Mr Hardy said. "The CSC management would not like to go against any safety issues, we would just like to say that it would be a major inconvenience to us."

At present, vehicles are not allowed to turn right from Masters Rd into Drummond St, and right from Drummond St onto Masters Rd during peak periods.

The RTA is proposing to make this rule permanent to improve safety at the intersection, saying there have been two fatalities and 30 crashes at the site in 12 years.

Residents and businesses have also signed a petition, echoing CSC's opposition to the change.

Lounges Plus owner Paul Gauci said closing the median would have a negative impact on his business as many customers used the road to access his shop, while long-term resident John Gralton questioned why a roundabout or traffic lights could not be installed at the site.

An RTA spokeswoman said traffic lights were not suitable for a number of reasons.

"Traffic signals are found to increase the possibility of rear-end crashes and would attract increased traffic volumes through the residential areas of Mount St Thomas," the spokeswoman said.

"(They also) cause a wider dispersion of traffic to other locations, be undesirable with the anticipated growth in heavy vehicles travelling through this location, and reduce capacity for the 25,000 vehicles travelling along this link each day."

The proposal would be funded under the Australian Government's black spot program.

I am a resident of Mt St Thomas, and for years I have diced with death at that intersection legally turning right, going to and from work each day.

I was often abused for pointing out that people were turning illegally in front of me, so I agree that something needs to be done. However, the spokeswoman mentioned in this article suggested the other day that we could go along Masters Rd and turn right onto The Avenue to reach Mt St Thomas, which is absolutely ludicrous.

The Avenue is already choked in the afternoons with drivers who choose not to break the "no right turn" law to head south, so all the RTA is doing is moving one black spot to another.

A set of lights or roundabout (and a speed camera or warning sign to slow down the trucks, who will only go faster without small vehicle obstacles), is the best option for all concerned.

It was also suggested that I could go through an extra six sets of lights to reach my home, which adds at least 10 - 12 minutes to my travel time, an hour of my week spent behind the wheel. It only creates more frustration and impatience.

This is an issue that the whole community needs to speak up about. It is not only residents of Mount St Thomas which will be affected.

The ridiculous and poorly thought-out plan will increase travel time to residents of Coniston and Mangerton and will increase traffic flow through the already congested Princes Hwy at Figtree.

Like "annoyed" I do not want an extra 10 minutes added to my travel time. Surely some traffic lights and a reduced speed limit will do the job.

Agreed with the previous comments. Something needs to be done for safety of the intersection but definitely not closure. Money will be an issue (how about a bridge or underpass of some sort). This is a handy access route.

I completley agree with all the above comments above.

The intersection needs to be carefully reviewed and must not be closed.

As a resident of Mt St Thomas I rely upon this access on a daily basis.

Why can't the RTA set up traffic lights at this intersection?

It will save a lot of lives and slow down all those heavy vehicles screaming down Masters Rd I hear each night.

This route is very convenient for all families and I do not want to spend my days having to add extra time travelling when the solution to this problem is obvious.

We already have an influx of traffic in Figtree and it doesn't seem to be easing. A foreclosure will only cause more congestion which we do not need.

Concerning the Drummond St closure. Not all residents are against the closure if it means that traffic lights are installed.

We think that the noise from the exhaust brakes on the trucks stopping at these lights would severely impact on the residents who live here day and night not just in business hours.

Totally disgusted with the RTA over their decision. We the community should be consulted in regards to this matter. Not only is this route convenient but closing it will turn it into a nuisance and cause extra traffic congestion in the surrounding areas "all the time"
