Plan to open up majority of Wollongong beaches to dogs

01 Jul, 2009 05:30 PM
Dogs will be allowed on all but four of Wollongong City Council's beaches from Stanwell Park to Windang under a proposed extension of dog exercise areas.

Six of the seven existing off-leash beaches will be retained as "green zones" and three new areas will be added in the council's new traffic light system.

Four of the region's busiest beaches and all coastal rock pools will be red no-go zones, with dogs banned 24 hours a day. They include Austinmer and Coledale beaches, and the coastline from North Wollongong Beach to the southern end of City Beach.

  • Doggy doo hits fan over new beach zonings

All other beaches will be orange on-leash zones, where owners will be allowed to walk dogs before 9am or after 6pm.

At present, dogs are banned from all Wollongong beaches except off-leash areas at Bellambi boat ramp, Coniston Beach, Little Austinmer Beach, McCauley's Beach at Thirroul, MM Beach at Port Kembla, Perkins Beach at Windang and Sharkey's Beach at Coledale.

A discussion paper, which can be viewed and commented on until August 6, proposes to add new off-leash areas at the northern end of Stanwell Park, north of Flanagans Creek at Thirroul and at Puckeys Beach, north of the lagoon. Sharkey's Beach would become an orange shared zone.

Community kiosks will be held at Bellambi Rock Pool from 10.30am this Saturday, Thirroul fete on Sunday, Westfield Warrawong on July 16, Stanwell Park on July 18 and Coledale on July 26.

The council hopes to roll out the changes in time for summer.

Director of planning and environment, Andrew Carfield, said the policy was drafted in response to public feedback and complaints.

More than one-third of the city's residents are dog owners, with 23,000 registered dogs and thousands more unregistered animals.

"It is a balanced approach that provides greater opportunities for dog owners ... and also protects the amenity of the beaches for other beach users by minimising the impact of dogs on the beaches," he said.

  • Wollongong's beaches are already the most dog friendly in the Illawarra.

Kiama council has six off-leash headland areas but just one off-leash beach at Bombo. Dogs are prohibited on all Shellharbour City Council beaches.

Mr Carfield said Wollongong's other off-leash parks would remain unchanged until off-leash areas are reviewed next year.

The scheme is also expected to make it easier for rangers to enforce the rules. "When the flags are up the dogs are not to be there," regulation and enforcement manager Peter Chrystal said.

Dogs are banned on all shellharbour council beaches, what a joke. Any time of the day you will see dogs running around and doing ther buisiness. Especially little lake where there are plenty of people in summer.

All areas of the Illawarra have always seemed to be dogs off leash areas.

That would be ok if dog owners picked up the mess their dogs make but most owners just kick sand over it . I take my son to the beach often and have seen this happen a number of times.

There are three problems with this proposal and they are 1. Irresponsible dog owners will still let their dogs off the leash whether a sign prohibits such activity or not. 2. Irresponsible dog owners will not pick their dog's droppings. 3.Irresponsible dog owners. There are insufficient Rangers employed by WCC to properly police these proposed changes much less the current situation. As acknowledged by Andrew Carfield there are thousands of unregistered dogs in the WCC area, why, insuffiecient resources to ensure compliance, therefore lost revenue. These proposals came from dog owners, did WCC bother to ascertain what the non-dog owners wanted? No.

This wont be a problem as long as the owners of the dogs pick up after them instead of leaving their mess behind

Sutherland has two off leash beaches and Shell harbour has none. Why make us the dog poo Magnet This is Ridiculous.

How will we tell the difference? Irresponsible owners have been letting their dogs run loose on every beach in the region for years - especially in the mornings and evenings. This is nothing more than Wollongong City Council deciding they can't police the existing rules so they've given up.

Why change the status of Sharkeys? the dogs there are the friendliest happiest bunch of everywhere. Please don't change that to an onleash area. Perhaps Wollongong Council needs to invest in adequate pooper scooper bags & bins (like they have on far South Coast beaches) to encourage the ratbags who don't do the right thing and pick their dog poos up. It's not that hard..you just grab a plastic bag, turn it inside out and grab the poo!! come on people. Don't make it hard for those of us who do the right thing.

I have no objection to owners taking their dogs anywhere in public, so long as they are well behaved, on a lead where practical, and THAT THE OWNERS CARRY PLASTIC BAGS AND CLEAN UP AFTER THEIR POOCHES.

Sharkey beach is a prime example of dog owners gone bad, if Truestory had spoken to the residents of this beach (or witnessed the truly average behavior) you would have discovered that we have put up with the destruction of what was once a fantastic beach for families and tourists. In short; dogs and children do not mix, dog owners do not take responsibility, and as a community we are sick of being told by dog owners that it is a dog beach and so we should just put up with having our kids sandcastles urinated on and the hidden dog poo in the sand??? Time for a change.
