Policeman saved by notebook

A notebook, business cards and a coffee customer loyalty voucher are all that saved Inspector Brian Wyver from being stabbed in the heart.The well-known Wollongong police officer was attending the home of a 39-year-old Austinmer man accused of assault on Saturday night when he was stabbed in the chest with a 30-centimetre knife.The knife tore through Inspector Wyver's police shirt and the business cards before penetrating half the pages of the notepad in his top left pocket.Adam Christopher Johnstone was yesterday refused bail on charges of attempted murder, using an offensive weapon to prevent detention and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.Unperturbed, the police veteran of 32 years remained on the job throughout an ensuing five-hour siege on Saturday night, then went on to complete his shift at 6am. Yesterday he dismissed the incident as ''all in a day's work''.''I'm doing fine, I'm in good spirits,'' he said.Police attended Mr Johnstone's Dunne Street home on Saturday at 8pm in relation to an incident that had occurred the previous day at Thirroul Plaza, Wollongong Court was told.Mr Johnstone barricaded himself inside his home, telling them, ''I am the king of England, get off my property or you will be shot.''As Inspector Wyver approached, Mr Johnstone is alleged to have opened the front door and lunged at his chest with a knife, forcing him backwards. He then retreated inside the house and a siege began.The standoff ended at 1am with police forcing entry to the premises and finding Mr Johnstone under the floor. A 30cm knife was also found under the floor while a second knife was found in Mr Johnstone's pants, police said.
