Political parties woo coal seam gas opponent

21 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
Environmental activist Jess Moore has become a wanted woman, with approaches by two major political parties hoping to capitalise on her status as an anti-coal seam gas campaigner.

Ms Moore, 29, (pictured) has been the voice of the Stop Coal Seam Gas Illawarra movement, raising eyebrows in political circles after her success in galvanising community action.

She helped collect more then 10,000 signatures, and was among those who led a 3000-strong march across Sea Cliff bridge in October, despite joining the movement only about 12 months ago.

In a sign of how politically sensitive the CSG issue has become, Ms Moore said she spurned approaches from both the Australian Labor Party and the Greens, who said they wanted her to join their ranks.

"I have had an offer to be a Greens organiser and I've had people suggesting I need to join the Labor Party or the Greens or both in terms of maybe being elected," she said.

Ms Moore, a tutor in environmental science at the University of Wollongong, has already run in one council election, two state elections and a federal election, receiving single-digit support in all races.

She is a member of the Socialist Alliance, an anti-capitalist group which formed in 2001 and ran under the Community Voice ticket in Wollongong's council elections earlier in the year.

She said the Stop CSG movement was not about political advancement but about campaigning for policy change, and that interest in her showed that the movement was successful.

"It tells me that major political parties are desperate to be associated with such a vital campaign," she said.

Do the Greens and Socialist Alliance still not realise and understand that they sabotaged a true genuine independent community based campaign in "Community Voice?"

Prevented experienced community based representatives running for local government. And deals done to secure Greens positions in wards 1 & 2 but didn't want ward 3, where significant development and sensitive escarpment lands need protecting. I guess if you look at recent recisision motion after taking their eye off the ball in play you find your answer.

As if she would go anywhere near those losers.

People, voters, must remember that is was Greens backed Labor Parties that created the CSG situation im both Queensland and NSW. No matter what, it is vital that Labor Governments get booted out of power so that in three years they can front the public with better candidates and policies that do protect the environment. I am delighted to hear that Jess Moore is smart enough to stay away from them and to retain her independance.

The answer to Coal Seam Gas proponents' problems are simple - provide peer reviewed scientific studies that prove the mining is safe! Now that's not rocket science is it?

The anti CSG cause has now lost my support. These commo radicals are all nutters

Tell her she is dreaming. I think she needs to keep her ego in check.

She said it in the article, it's about being elected, it isn't about doing what she thinks is the right thing.

Shame on the ALP and the Greens for thinking that someone that got less than 10% of the vote is worthy of being elevated, well, I wouldn't expect any less of them.

Jess Less!

the voice of csg had to be asked to do that - and told what the issue was - so much for leadership. yes jess has done a lot in a grass roots socialist barricades type of way and is a colourful dedicated young local figure who would have got more votes as an independent for council. but this article is naive - not a good look, not diplomatic. I would not trust anyone with an old fashioned socialist hue with power.

Jess is articulate and clear with a social and environmental conscience. Why wouldn't major parties want her. She is unlike the majority of corporate brown nosers out there in pollitics who can't see anything beyond the next election. I'd definitely vote for her.

JESS MOORE FOR PM.

Just because someone believes they should have power, does not necessarily mean its wise to give it to them.
